Bahamas Sending 57 Haitian Refugees Back to Homeland
Authorities in the Bahamas have said that they are in the process of sending back 57 Haitian migrants to their homeland who were found near the Caribbean British territory, according to the Associated Press.
Immigration Director Jack Thompson said Wednesday that 49 men, seven women and one child were hiding near Exuma to escape from their impoverished conditions in Haiti after an earthquake devastated more 1.6 million people in January.
The director has said that the refugees will be sent back to Cap-Haïtien, located off the coast of Haiti. Last week, the U.S Coast Guard spotted 300 Haiti escapees in two sailboats in the Bahamas. The Bahamian government suspended repatriations of Haitians after the earthquake, but is placing firmer restrictions across the island.
Haiti is in the midst of recovering from the earthquake damage that killed more than 300,000 people.
