Obama Helps Teachers Out with New Bill
To avoid teacher layoffs President Obama signed into law a $26 billion measure Tuesday afternoon. Several states including Arizona, Illinois and New York have already cut education programs, being forced to let go of educators and childcare programs.
The money will be divided into two parts: $10 billion for teacher positions and $16 billion to help cover state Medicaid payments. Democrats believe this measure is vital to balance with the many state and local government cutbacks.
Republican leaders have blasted the bill as an irresponsible union giveaway that will impede prospects for a long-term economic recovery.
