The pilot marks the first project from Kardashian’s first-look deal with 20th Television, the Disney TV Studios division co-producing the series alongside BET Studios, where Barris is a principal partner. The pilot is written by Black-ish creator Barris, with Anthony’s best-selling book The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness serving as a loose inspiration for the show’s concept.
According to an exclusive from Deadline, Group Chat centers on five glamorous and successful women in their 40s who’ve seemingly mastered the LA lifestyle. But beneath the curated Instagram reels and luxe appearances lies a raw and revealing group chat, where secrets spill, friendships are tested, and truth always finds a way to bubble up.
Longtime besties Kim Kardashian and La La are stepping behind the camera as executive producers, along with Barris and Adam Kassan through Barris’ Khalabo Ink Society. The announcement adds to Kardashian’s growing slate of scripted projects, including her upcoming Ryan Murphy legal drama All’s Fair, and her hit reality show The Kardashians. She’s also co-producing the Netflix drama Calabasas with Emma Roberts.
La La is best known for her roles in Power, BMF, and The Chi. Now, she brings her previous acting knowledge, real-life experience and charisma to the show’s leading role. Her presence alongside Barris’ writing and Kardashian’s producing clout promises a sharp, juicy, and culturally relevant new window to the comedy scene.
As Hulu continues expanding its live-action comedy offerings with shows like Mid-Century Modern and the upcoming Chad Powers with Glen Powell, Group Chat is shaping up to be a fresh favorite for fans of edgy, ensemble-driven storytelling. With the star power behind it, the only question left is: what exactly are they saying in that chat?
Stay tuned because this one might just be too real.
