Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to serve Utah’s 4th Congressional District in 2014, is battling through an aggressive brain tumor that is no longer responding to treatment. On March 1, Love’s daughter, Abigale, made the unfortunate announcement that her mother’s battle with glioblastoma (GBM), a common type of malignant (cancerous) brain tumor, was taking a turn for the worse.

“Hello Friends, I’m Mia’s daughter Abigale. Many of you are aware that Mom has been fighting GBM brain cancer. Sadly, her cancer is no longer responding to treatment and the cancer is progressing,” she captioned a photo of the congresswoman surrounded by family.

“We have a shifted our focus from treatment to enjoying our remaining time with her. I am building an archive of special memories with Mia. Please send your pictures, videos and memories to me at MiaLoveMemories@gmail.com. Thank you,” she added.

GBM is a highly aggressive and devastating form of cancer that originates in the brain and spinal cord, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for this condition, and the outlook is grim due to the rapid growth of cancerous cells upon diagnosis. Without intervention, GBM can lead to death within six months. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for extending survival. According to the National Library of Medicine, the global incidence rate of GBM is approximately 3.19 cases per 100,000 people annually, meaning that about 3.19 individuals in every 100,000 are diagnosed with this deadly cancer each year.

Love was diagnosed with the condition in 2022 after falling ill with excruciating headaches during a family trip to Puerto Rico. The congresswoman who served in Utah between 2015 and 2019, shared her cancer journey story with Jake Tapper in an interview published May 15, 2024. At the time, she revealed that she was undergoing immunotherapy via a clinical trial to treat her brain tumor. Doctors were also able to remove 95% of the tumor.

“Every scan I go through, it’s either not growing, or it has reduced a little bit,” she shared at the time.

Despite doctors warning that she might not survive GBM, Love stayed hopeful. In a Facebook post from May 16, 2024, the Republican star expressed her optimism and her desire to share her journey, hoping to inspire others who were battling cancer or facing their own struggles.

“There is hope! For me, that hope comes from my faith and my family. Both have been a source of immeasurable strength, peace, love, and support. Every day, I thank God for my life and a family who give that life beauty and meaning,” she penned.
