Making the first move isn’t easy for everyone. But it’s something that must be done if a person intends to get to know another individual. Some people do it by simply approaching the person they want to get to know. In school settings, someone may pass a note. With social media, people may choose to directly message the person they’re interested in.
Those are just some of the typical ways one might try to get another person’s attention. But there is another creative way… through music. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite artists who have shot their shot in a song.
1. Meek Mill (Lori Harvey)

Meek Mill’s song “Going Bad” is a well-known example of someone shooting their shot. The 2018 hit featured Drake and was the first time the two artists did a song together since resolving their beef. But it also gave Lori Harvey (Steve Harvey’s adopted daughter) a spotlight that she has since brightened on her own.
Mill rapped:
I got Lori Harvey on my wish list
That’s the only thing I want for Christmas
Soon after that, the world saw much more of Harvey. She became a hot topic in headlines initially due to her busy dating life. She’s dated Memphis Depay, Trey Songz, Future, Michael B. Jordan, and most recently Damson Idris. Reports say she dated Justin Combs and years later was photographed with his dad Diddy. However, she denied ever dating a “father and son.”
Despite her dating history, it seems that Mill’s efforts hasn’t gotten him a chance with the model yet.
2. Yo Gotti (Angela Simmons)

Yo Gotti is another rapper who bravely professed his obsession for a woman who was none other than Angela Simmons. In 2015, he released his hit song “Down In the DM.” As the title suggests, it’s all about someone shooting their shot, which he does in the second verse.
In the later half, he says:
And I just followed Angela (Simmons)
Boy, I got a crush on Angela (Simmons)
They like, “D-mn, Gotti, you bold” (bold)
F–k it, I’m gon’ let the world know, goals
His profession did nothing for him at the moment because she began dating and later got engaged to Sutton Tennyson. The couple welcomed their son Sutton Joseph before splitting in 2017. Tennyson was fatally shot that next year after getting into a heated argument.
After staying out of the limelight for a bit, Simmons decided she was ready to date again. She and Gotti made their relationship official in January 2023, four months after he attended her 35th birthday party. Afterward, they traveled together and shared lavish Instagram photos. As of late, it has been kind of quiet between the couple, so it’s not clear if they are still together.
3. Chris Brown (Karrueche Tran)

Chris Brown’s relationship with Karrueche Tran began in 2011. They met when on the job when she was a personal assistant to a stylist. The relationship was rocky from the start because Brown’s ex Rihanna was still in and out of the picture. Rihanna and Brown had a public breakup after getting into a physical altercation in 2009 that resulted in Brown getting into legal trouble.
As time went on Brown began to date Tran; however, it was clear by the song collaborations, public support for one another, and public outings, that he and Rihanna still had feelings for each other. He ended things with Tran in 2012 and got back with Rihanna, but that ended in 2013.
He and Tran got back together and were on and off, partly due to Brown’s infidelity. But the Claws star had seemingly had enough of Brown’s transgressions. The moment she learned he had a 9-month-old baby with another woman, that was the last straw. Tran ended their relationship in March 2015.
But it took longer for Brown to let things go. In 2016, he screamed her name in the remix of his song “Back to Sleep.”
He apologized for cheating and then sang:
Yeah baby don’t test me
You know I’ll do it.
You want me to say your name girl?
Okay, Karrueche!
Unfortunately for him, his efforts did not lead to the two getting back together.

4. GloRilla (Duke Dennis)

Men aren’t the only ones in this music business who are shooting their shots. Memphis artist GloRilla proved she was a real shooter when she joined Jorjiana’s bass-thumping song “ILBB2” in February. The 25-year-old not only made it clear what her type was — tall, brown, and mixed with a little bit of ugly — but she also revealed who she currently has eyes for.
She said:
Like my n–gas tall and brown
And mixed with a little bit of ugly
They say shooters shoot.
Duke Dennis, what’s up with you?
Dennis, who is a popular streamer and is close friends with Kai Cenat, reacted days after the song’s release.
He appeared taken aback by his name being mentioned soon after GloRilla’s lyrics about her type.
“Those two lines is separate, though, right? Like the two lines is separate. Like you weren’t talking about me — I think it was like ‘uh-uhs’ in between, you know, two different bars and like two different people. I don’t know who she was talking about,” he said while chuckling.
The two have not said whether they have been in contact since.
5. NBA YoungBoy (Reginae Carter)

NBA YoungBoy has several children with multiple different women but that doesn’t stop the rapper from wanting more.
According to Hot New Hip Hop, he welcomed his 12th child last September. But back in 2020, YoungBoy was open to making Carter a part of his extensive family tree.
On the remix of his version of Jay-Z’s “The Story of O.J.,” the 25-year-old raps:
The s–t ain’t Fugazi
I’m tryna convince Fee to tell Reginae
How big the s–t gon’ be if we have a baby
But I’m serious though
Carter’s boyfriend at the time, rapper YFN Lucci, was not too fond of YoungBoy’s proposition. Under The Shade Room’s report of the story, Lucci wrote, “Boi a real b—h in person.”
Carter, who is also Lil Wayne’s eldest child, didn’t address YoungBoy directly. However, some fans believe the Instagram post she made the day after was in response to him.
In a Fashion Nova promotion post, she wrote the caption “No Thanks” with a kiss emoji.
7. Drake (Nicki Minaj)

Drake has shamelessly mentioned a few women in his songs over the years. However, one of his most memorable moments is when he expressed his love for his label mate Nicki Minaj.
In his 2010 song “Miss Me” he raps:
I love Nicki Minaj
I told her I’d admit it
I hope one day we get married
Just to say we f–kin’ did it girl
And girl I’m f–kin’ serious
I’m with it if you with it
Because your verses turn me on
And you pants are mighty fitted
Nothing romantic ever came of their friendship and the two also weren’t on speaking terms for a bit. While Drake was beefing with Meek Mill, Mill was dating Minaj until January 2017. But Drake and Minaj have since reunited.
