A’ja Wilson and Nike are bringing the heat. The star athlete joined a group of only 12 WNBA players in history to have a signature shoe when her Nike signature shoe and collection was released to the public earlier this month.

The debut of Wilson’s Nike A’One shoe coincides with a surge in popularity of women’s basketball and women’s basketball sneakers. The WNBA saw record-breaking viewership and attendance in the 2024 season. Additionally, the Nike Sabrina 2, worn by New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, is currently one of the most popular sneakers in the NBA.

Nike says the “Pink A’ura” colorway represents the 28-year-old’s leadership, confidence, and vibrant personality. Wilson, whose favorite color is pink, emphasized that the apostrophe should come after the A. The Nike A’One will debut in this shimmering color, which Nike says reflects her bold Leo energy.

The shoe’s composition: a layered upper with cuts that form a gradient on the launch colorway. The A’One’s sole, constructed with Cushlon ST2 foam, provides a firm base and cushioned landings. Its layered design resembles the inside of a pearl, an important symbol in the shoe’s design.

According to Complex, “The A’One ties back to Wilson’s family. Its pearl inspiration is connected to a necklace her grandmother gave her as a child, and Wilson’s Celtic character tattoos that appear inside the tongues reference her mother and father.” Ben Nethongkome, a prolific Nike designer involved in the design of the brand’s current signature basketball shoes, also designed this sneaker.

The legend told Nike, “If you think you’ve seen my best, think again,” says Wilson. “We worked for over two years to create the Nike A’One to help me redefine the limits of greatness and advance the game to another level. My signature shoe is worth the wait — engineered for my game and my style, and built to motivate the next generation to go big. Just wait to see what we do with it.”

The Nike A’One Signature Collection, featuring a signature apparel collection for adults and kids with a bold, refined aesthetic and the A’One Calm slide for comfort and style, will be available in May 2025 at SNKRS, nike.com, and select retail locations.

A’ja Does it For The Culture

The collection centers around Wilson’s A’Symmetric tight, reflecting her unique style. It includes a cropped hoodie with a sateen-lined hood, sateen shorts, and cropped and full-length T-shirts. Kid’s sizes are also available, featuring the A’Symmetric tight, hoodie, mesh shorts, and T-shirt.

While we love sneakers, it’s the gem that the hoodie is actually a bonnet that has us shook. The Black girl in me feels so seen. It serves many purposes two being satisfying her mom’s request for her not to wear bonnets in the airport and also to protect her fly hairstyles at all costs.

And the timing of A’ja being named one of Time’s 2025 Women of the Year this week just feels like all the Black Girl Magic during Black History Month.
