Thinning eyebrows can be a bummer, especially if you once had full, healthy, and thriving brows. If you’re struggling to restore hair in your eyebrows, don’t panic. According to health experts, it’s a common issue that can result from factors like hormonal changes, aging, or overplucking. While it may take some time to restore their fullness, there are several simple steps you can take to help encourage new growth that will bring your dull and thinning eyebrows back to life.
1. Don’t over-pluck; pluck properly.

The first step to restoring your brow health is to stop over plucking, a common cause of thinning brows. Jared Bailey, Benefit Cosmetics’ global brow expert, explained to Glamour in a Feb. 5 article that improper hair removal can damage the dermal vessels that stimulate hair follicle growth, making it harder for the hair to grow back over time.
If you can’t go to a professional to have your eyebrows plucked correctly, make sure you are tweezing properly at home.
“To tweeze properly, you must hold the skin taut with one finger and then tweeze the hair in the direction it is growing,” Bailey said. “Typically, that direction is upward or toward the temple, rather than straight out.”
2. Change your diet to promote brow growth.

To encourage eyebrow growth, start by adjusting your diet. According to Health, a deficiency in iron and protein can contribute to hair loss, so ensuring your diet is rich in these nutrients can help promote hair regrowth. Iron-rich foods such as iron-fortified breakfast cereals, dried beans, dried fruits like apricots, prunes, and raisins, and egg yolks can support healthy hair growth. Protein-rich foods like lean meats, fish, and plant-based proteins are also important for strengthening hair follicles. Brow hair, like scalp hair, can change in density over time due to a variety of factors, including hormonal shifts, diet, and overall nutrition.
3. Avoid heavy skin creams, dyes and lotions.

Heavy skin creams, such as foundation and sunscreen, can hinder eyebrow growth by clogging the hair follicles. Studies have also shown that products containing heavy metals like lead, mercury, selenium, hallium, and colchicine are linked to hair loss, including conditions like Alopecia, which can contribute to thinning eyebrows. According to 3D-Beauty and Ask Cares, these harmful toxins are sometimes found in eyebrow dyes and products used during the microblading process. It’s essential to keep your brow area free from products that may block the natural growth of your brow hairs.

4. Massage your brows to stimulate brow growth.

Massaging your brows can stimulate growth. While chatting with Glamour, Bailey suggested gently tapping your brow bone with your fingertips for about 30 seconds to increase blood flow, which in turn promotes healthy hair growth.

If you’re looking for another natural approach, consider adding a natural eyebrow growth serum to your routine. Choose serums containing ingredients like castor oil, biotin, and rosemary oil, all of which are known to promote hair growth and strengthen hair follicles. A 2015 study on rosemary oil for people with androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness) found that it helped stimulate hair regrowth as effectively as minoxidil, a well-known hair loss treatment, after just six months, according to Healthline.
Patience is key, as the timing can vary, and it may take some time to see results. With consistent care, your eyebrows can become fuller and healthier. The growth cycle for brows can take up to a year, and depending on the health of your hair follicles, it might take 12 to 16 weeks to reach their fullest potential. No matter how long it takes, trust the process and stay committed.
