An increasing number of men are choosing to undergo plastic surgery, a growing trend that some cosmetic doctors are calling the MAN-esthetics movement. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) released its 2024 annual trends survey on Feb. 4, revealing that men are increasingly seeking cosmetic procedures to address areas of their face, hair, and nose.

According to the report, 92% of AAFPRS surgeons reported having male patients last year, with blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery to remove excess skin, fat, or muscle), rhinoplasty (nose surgery), and facelifts among the most common procedures for men. Notably, hair transplantation also saw a significant increase, standing out as the only procedure where men outnumbered women, highlighting a shift in cosmetic interests.

People choose to undergo a blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, or a facelift for a variety of reasons, often related to both cosmetic desires and functional improvements. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is commonly sought for cosmetic reasons to reduce signs of aging, such as sagging eyelids or puffiness, helping individuals look more youthful and refreshed, according to Hopkins Medicine. It can also be done for functional purposes if excess skin or fat around the eyes is obstructing vision.

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is often performed to enhance the appearance of the nose by reconstructing it to improve size, shape, or symmetry. Additionally, it can address functional concerns like breathing issues caused by a deviated septum or other structural problems, helping to improve airflow and ease breathing.

While it sounds like a scary procedure, a facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, can improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Per Mayo Clinic, the procedure works by tightening the skin, muscles, and underlying tissue to smooth out wrinkles, sagging skin, and other signs of aging.

The procedure typically targets areas like the jawline, neck, and cheeks. The AAFPRS survey revealed that in 2024, the facelift gained popularity among both young men and women, with patients aged 35 to 55 accounting for 32% of recipients, seeing a 26% increase compared to previous years.

Doctors say the MAN-esthetics trend could reflect that, like women, men also have a strong desire to maintain a youthful appearance.

“…And with so many minimally invasive options, more men are embracing discreet, quick-healing treatments than ever before,” said Dr. Patrick J. Byrne, president of AAFPRS, during an interview with the New York Post published Feb. 6.

Byrne has also observed a significant rise in men seeking neurotoxins, dermal fillers, and other skin treatments, which remain the top three non-surgical procedures for men, according to the latest annual survey. Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implants or soft tissue fillers, are FDA-approved medical devices that enhance facial features by adding volume, creating a smoother appearance in areas like the cheeks, chin, and lips. Similarly, neurotoxins, such as Botox, work by temporarily relaxing muscles to smooth out wrinkles, especially around the forehead, crow’s feet, and between the eyebrows.

“Non-surgical treatments continue to gain traction among men, especially neurotoxins like Botox, which are increasingly sought after by those striving to look refreshed, reduce signs of aging, and preserve a competitive advantage in both professional and social settings,” Dr. Byrne shared while adding, “Today, patients have more flexibility with working from home and the ability for downtime, so it’s no surprise that men are seeking these types of surgeries for the same reasons as women — to reduce jowling in the lower face, improve neck laxity, lift the upper face.”
