Having an orgasm is incredible for intimacy, but there are other amazing health benefits associated with the “Big O” that may surprise you.

Several health experts suggest that having regular orgasms can benefit your skin, improve sleep, and even boost your immunity. In an October 2024 interview with Glamour, sex therapist Dr. Nan Wise explained that the brain and vagina work together during sexual stimulation. When you reach climax, neurotransmitters are released, sending pleasure signals throughout your body. Experiencing this chemical reaction regularly, whether daily or monthly, can work wonders for your overall health and may even contribute to a longer life.

“These substances are wonderful for your overall physical and emotional well-being. They can reduce stress, improve sleep, enhance immunity, and boost mood,” said Dr. Wise. “Orgasms have been shown to have benefits for our hormones, immune system, and health of the pelvic floor. Most research on longevity benefits are done on men, but we have no reason to believe that regular orgasms wouldn’t also have a positive impact on women’s longevity as well. Regular orgasms have been linked to overall well-being and sexual satisfaction,” Dr. Wise added.

Here are eight ways having an orgasm can help you look and feel amazing.

1. It can boosts estrogen levels

A 2009 study revealed that orgasms can naturally increase estrogen production, which is key to maintaining youthful skin. Higher estrogen levels help sustain collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm and resistant to wrinkles. It also reduces epidermal thinning as we age, acting as a powerful anti-aging agent for your skin. Research also suggests that estrogen can slow down the thinning of the epidermis that often occurs with our skin as we age.

2. Helps alleviate headaches

Orgasms may provide relief for those suffering from migraines and cluster headaches. During climax, rhythmic muscle contractions release tension, and endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, are triggered, offering relief.

A 2013 survey found that 34% of migraine sufferers experienced improvement in symptoms after sexual activity, with 70% reporting moderate to full relief, with a noteworthy 60% reporting subsequent improvement. For patients contending with cluster headaches, 31% similarly engaged in sexual activity during an episode, with 37% experiencing relief afterward. Astonishingly, a substantial 91% of those reporting relief described their symptoms as moderately to wholly relieved.

3. Improves sleep

Orgasms help you sleep better by releasing the hormone prolactin, which promotes relaxation and sleepiness, according to the Sleep Foundation. Sex also triggers the release of oxytocin and vasopressin, hormones that enhance sleep quality. Many people find that an orgasm makes it easier to unwind and drift off.

4. Breast enhancement

Surprisingly, orgasms can make your breasts temporarily fuller. During sexual stimulation and orgasm, blood flow increases to the chest, giving your breasts a fuller appearance, according to Dr. Wise. Sadly, the perky boost isn’t permanent, but it will definitely look good in the moment and hopefully help to intensify things in the bedroom, making the connection between you and your partner even more steamy.

5. Plumper lips

Not only do your breasts benefit from the boost in blood circulation, but your lips also get a temporary plump. The increase in blood flow to your face during orgasm can give your lips a thicker, fuller look post-romp, according to Dr. Wise.

6. Immune system boost

A satisfying sex life could be your secret weapon during cold and flu season. Orgasms trigger the release of neurotransmitters that help regulate the immune system, potentially making you more resistant to illness. To put things into perspective, a 1999 study by Wilkes University found that individuals who engaged in sexual activity once or twice a week had significantly higher levels of the antibody Immunoglobulin A (IgA) compared to those who reported no sexual activity or less than once a week.

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is an antibody that plays a crucial role in the immune system. It’s found in various bodily fluids, including saliva, tears, and mucus, and is particularly important for protecting the body’s mucosal surfaces, such as those in the respiratory and digestive tracts, from infections. IgA helps to neutralize pathogens like bacteria and viruses before they can enter the body and cause harm. Higher levels of IgA are often associated with better immune defense, especially in areas exposed to external pathogens.

A surprising 2021 study examined the link between sexual frequency and COVID-19 infection. The survey, which included 16,000 participants over the age of 18 from 33 countries, found intriguing results. Participants who had sex more than three times a month (Group 1) showed a significantly lower rate of infection—76.6% were not infected, and those who were infected generally experienced only mild symptoms. In contrast, Group 2, who had sex less than three times a month, had a much higher infection rate, with roughly 50% of participants either infected or not, at 40.43%.

7. Better body image

Studies show a connection between body image and orgasm frequency. Women who feel confident in their bodies tend to have more satisfying sexual experiences, and those who have regular orgasms report better self-esteem and a more positive body image.

8. Reduces stress and anxiety

The release of oxytocin during orgasms helps lower stress levels, creating a sense of calm and relaxation. This reduction in stress not only helps emotionally but also improves your overall mental health, making you feel more centered and less anxious.
