Are the cold weather and long winter days getting you down? If you’re feeling tired, lazy, sluggish, or just a bit off, a little self-care can do wonders to lift your spirits. A fresh haircut, for example, can give you that boost of energy you need to get up off the couch, out of those baggy sweatpants and into a sexy outfit. With a brand new haircut you feel more motivated to get things done and reconnect with friends, even in the chill of winter — because when you look good, you feel good.
This isn’t just a saying either, there’s science behind the famous motto. According to biopsychologist, Marry Poffenroth, getting a new haircut during the colder months can give you a nice dopamine release, helping to improve your self-esteem and confidence.
“We are looking at our heads all the time, so [hair] really can be a strong association with our identity,” the health expert said during an interview with SELF published Jan. 7. As Poffenroth explains, this is one of the reasons why a great haircut can leave you feeling genuinely “transformed” or “empowered.”
If you’re looking for a few haircut ideas that will help lift you out of a winter funk, here are a few hairstyles that are worth trying this season.
1. Curly Shag

The curly shag is a fun, low-maintenance style that plays up natural curls while giving them a modern twist. With its choppy layers and volume at the crown, it adds texture and movement, making it perfect for the winter months when you want a cozy yet cool look. Actress Zendaya pulled this look off effortlessly while attending the Kid’s Choice Awards in 2017.
The best part about the curly shag is that it works with all curl types, from loose waves to tight coils, and requires little styling. You can add some mousse or curl cream to enhance the shape or volume of your crown. It’s an effortlessly chic choice that can keep you feeling fresh and free, no matter how chilly it gets outside.

2. Wispy Bangs
Wispy bangs are a great way to add softness and structure to your look without the commitment of heavier, blunt bangs. This style works especially well in the winter when you want to frame your face while maintaining a light, airy vibe.
Black-ish star, Yara Shahidi, rocked gorgeous wispy bangs while attending the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards and it added a refined touch to her sophisticated pinstriped suit. What’s great about the style is that the delicate, piecey texture of wispy bangs complements a variety of haircuts, from long waves to short styles, and can help add a touch of playfulness to your winter outfits. Wispy bangs grow gracefully over time, making them easy to maintain as the season progresses.

3. Textured Lob

The textured lob is the ultimate versatile winter hairstyle. It’s the perfect balance of length and ease, hitting just above the shoulders for a flattering, face-framing effect. The textured cut adds movement and body, making it ideal for those who want a look that’s both polished and relaxed. You can also add layers to the style for an edgy twist like Gabrielle Union did during her appearance at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Whether you wear it straight, wavy, or curly, the textured lob works well with just about any texture, and the styling options are endless. Plus, it’s low-maintenance enough for busy mornings but still feels put-together for any occasion.

4. Pixie Cut

For those who crave a big change, the pixie cut is the way to go. This short, edgy cut is all about confidence, sharp lines, dramatic angles, and a fresh, empowering vibe that suits the winter season perfectly. A pixie can highlight your features and make a strong statement, whether you opt for a sleek, polished look or a tousled, bedhead effect.
You can add a bang, curls, or opt to keep your style minimal. Cardi B added an asymmetrical bang to her pixie cut hairstyle while dazzling on the red carpet at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, and it added a classy contrast to her ensemble.
All in all, the pixie cut is incredibly low-maintenance, making it ideal for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time styling. If you’re ready for a big change this winter, a bomb pixie cut will definitely make you stand out.

5. Buzz Cut

If you’re after something liberating and bold, the buzz cut is a powerful, no-nonsense option that’s perfect for winter. Cut low to the scalp or with a little bit of hair left on top, this ultra-short style requires very little maintenance and gives you an effortless, clean look that works in any weather.
A buzz cut can highlight your face shape and give you a fresh, sharp edge, offering a chic, minimalist vibe. You can wear your natural hair color along with it or opt for a pop of color like Jada Pinkett Smith. In 2024, the actress and podcast host went blonde with her buzz cut, creating a bold, sexy look for the Los Angeles LGBT Center Gala.
This look is perfect for those who want to embrace the season without worrying about managing longer hair, and the low-maintenance nature of the style makes it a great option during the cold months when you’re often bundling up.

6. Curly Afro

The curly afro is a timeless, show-stopping style that embraces natural texture and adds major volume. Whether you’re rocking a classic afro or a more modern, sculpted version, this style makes a statement and adds a bold pop to your winter look. Have fun playing around with the length. You can cut your afro short or leave it long depending on your style needs.
It’s especially great for those with tighter curls who want to embrace their natural shape, volume, and texture and can be dolled up to fit with any outfit. The fro works beautifully with chunky scarves, oversized coats, and turtlenecks, making it the perfect winter hairstyle for anyone wanting to add personality and flair to the season’s cooler, darker days. It’s also a no-fuss, easy-care option that allows you to embrace your curls without the need for constant styling.
Actress Tracee Ellis Ross is famous for wearing her natural curly afro loud, long, and proud.
