Micro-mance is the latest dating trend that’s capturing the attention of Gen Z and millennials, where small, thoughtful gestures of affection are taking the spotlight over grand romantic gestures. According to a September survey by Bumble, this trend, coined from the combination of “micro” and “romance,” is all about showing you care through small but meaningful actions, rather than the classic grand gestures traditionally associated with romance.

The Bumble survey, which polled over 40,000 millennial and Gen Z users, found that 86% of singles now prefer showing affection through things like sending memes, creating playlists, or sharing inside jokes. These micro-gestures are seen as an intimate way to connect, and they highlight a shift in how younger generations express love and appreciation.

But here’s the thing: just because women are embracing smaller, more personalized acts of affection, it doesn’t mean they’re less interested in romance or love. In fact, the survey revealed that 52% of women consider themselves hopeless romantics who love love, and 37% have experienced a negative impact on their dating lives due to a lack of romance. So, while micro-mance is gaining popularity, women still want to feel loved and appreciated in a meaningful way.

As we head into 2025, a shift is happening—women are getting clearer about their expectations in relationships, Bumble noted. Nearly 64% of women are now setting higher standards for their partners and refuse to settle for anything less than what they truly want. In fact, Bumble reported that in 2024, approximately 87% of members were thriving in their dating lives, connecting with new people, boosting their confidence, and honing in on what they truly desired in a partner. That big romance energy is expected to carry over strong into 2025.

1. Send a Thoughtful Meme or Inside Joke

Humor is a great bonding tool, and sharing a meme or inside joke that only you and your partner understand can be a sweet way to show you’re thinking of them.

2. Create a Personalized Playlist

A playlist that reflects your partner’s tastes or reminds them of a special memory is a thoughtful and romantic gesture that can feel deeply personal. Incorporate a song that was special to both of you when you first met, or introduce each other to new music you think they’ll love. It’s a fun and meaningful way to strengthen your bond while sharing something personal.

3. Leave Sweet Notes

A handwritten note, or even a quick message through text, expressing how much they mean to you or reminding them of something special is a simple yet powerful way to show affection.

4. Plan Small Surprises

Whether it’s surprising them with their favorite snack, a random text just to check in, or whipping up a nice meal for you both to share—these small surprises can make a big impact.

5. Meaningful Conversations

Sometimes, the best form of affection is simply taking the time to listen, offer support, or have a deep conversation about your day or feelings. These moments of emotional connection are often far more intimate than any gift.
