We love to see Black women showing up and showing out for Black women.
Forever First Lady Michelle Obama defended Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles after NFL star Marlon Humphrey criticized them for bowing in respect to Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade following their exciting floor exercise final at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Aug. 5.
Biles and Chiles gracefully bowed down on their respective podiums to show love to Andrade after the 25-year-old Brazilian gymnast earned a Gold medal for her stellar floor exercise routine, narrowly beating Biles and Chiles with a score of 14.166. However, the beautiful moment received backlash from Humphrey, a cornerback with the Baltimore Ravens, on X.
Humphrey, 28, called the incredible act of sportsmanship “disgusting.”
Michelle Obama speaks out.
Before the NFL star could further disparage Biles and Chiles’ sweet gesture to Andrade, Mrs. Obama shut down the negativity.
“I’m still not over this beautiful moment of sisterhood and sportsmanship!” the 60-year-old Democrat penned. “You can just feel the love shining through these ladies. Congrats Rebeca, Jordan, and Simone!”
Fans of Michelle poured into the comments section to praise her for uplifting the trio, including the Democratic nominee for Florida Senate District, Mike Harvey, who penned, “This will be one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history. Not only did the best gymnast arguably ever bow and defer to a competitor, but it was also a competitor for another nation. @Simone_Biles and Jordan represented the team spirit of the United States. Go Team USA.”
A Brazilian fan also agreed, noting how they didn’t see the bow as an act of submission, but rather an incredible display of respect. “An opponent who recognizes the value of the other is something rare and very noble,” the user added.
Michelle wasn’t the only person to clap back at Humphrey’s wack comment.
Netizens took to X to criticize the NFL player, labeling his comment as “disgusting” and calling his performance on the field this season subpar. One user even referenced a 2018 incident where Humphrey faced a third-degree robbery charge for allegedly stealing a $15 phone charger from an Uber driver in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, according to ESPN. He was booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail with a $2,500 bond and was later released.
Other internet users criticized Humphrey, arguing that as an athlete, he should understand the importance of sportsmanship while some made him aware of how incredible Andrade’s feat was following her three torn ACL injuries earlier this year.
The heat became a little too hot for Humphrey to handle because later in the day the football star told fans he was getting “cooked” online for his comment.
Well, too bad! Congrats to Simone, Jordan and Rebeca.
