Today, there are dozens of types of birth control, from the IUD to the pill to injections and beyond. But, many people still prefer one of the simplest forms: the condom. Statista reports that about one-third of Americans use condoms.
If you don’t want to pump hormones through your body, or don’t know when a sexual encounter might occur, condoms can be a smart choice. Plus, condoms are the only birth control method that protects against pregnancy and STIs. So, if you are at risk of contracting or spreading an STI, condoms should be on your shopping list. However, not everyone finds satisfaction in the regular old rubbers you find in a candy dish at your OBGYN’s office. That’s why some innovators have created condoms that appeal to a variety of senses – literally. Here are eight types of condoms you’ve probably never heard of.
Dotted Condoms

You’ve heard of ribbed condoms, and now, there’s the dotted condom. If you’re looking for extra stimulation during sex, give these a try. They have raised bumps – or dots – on the outside that increase friction for the penetrating and penetrated party, which some people find pleasurable. (Note: if you’re ticklish or sensitive, the sensation can be too much)
Liquid Condoms

Liquid Condoms, also known as condoms in a can or spray-on condoms, are a type of antiseptic spray. Here’s how they work: the person being penetrated sprays the substance inside of their vagina or anus. It then forms a physical condom-like membrane when it comes in contact with the high temperatures of these orifices. Some varieties reportedly deliver a “lethal dose” of antiretroviral chemicals when they come in contact with semen, and are designed to prevent the spread of HIV, says News 24. This condom type is still in development, and scientists in several global markets have attempted to create their own.
A Ruler Condom

If your partner wants to prove they’re as big as they say they are, there’s a condom for that. One company called Condometric created a condom with actual measurements printed on the side. This can be great news for penis-having folks with massive members and doubtful partners. It can be not-so-good news for those who have been overestimating their size.
Tickler Condom

Sometimes called French ticklers, these condoms come in many designs. Each one has extended rubber parts, called “ticklers” that provide extra stimulation and are meant to tickle the private parts of the person being penetrated. Some have the ticklers all over the condom, while others have them just at the tip. Some ticklers are longer, while some aren’t much bigger than the dots on dotted condoms. *Note: tickler condoms do not prevent STIs or pregnancy. They are jut novelty items made for a little extra fun before you put on a real condom.
Teethed Condoms

Teethed Condoms are also known as anti-rape condoms. South African doctor Dr. Sonnet Ehlers was driven to create the condom after treating a rape victim who had said, “If only I had teeth down there.” So Dr. Ehlers set out to create a condom that would do exactly that, says CNN. The condom is inserted into the vagina like a tampon. In its interior are jagged, teeth-like hooks that attach to a man’s penis during penetration. Once the condom has attached to a man’s penis, a doctor would have to remove it. The idea is that authorities will be on standby at the hospital, at which point the man will be arrested.
Winged Condoms

No matter how many times you do it, putting on a condom can always be complicated. Which part goes inside and which goes out? How do you unroll a lubricated one without making a mess of your hands? The Wingman can solve these issues. This condom is held in place by a clip, so you don’t need to touch the actual condom at all when unrolling. The clip makes it easy to put the condom on, and the tip is held in place by a small plastic part that keeps it air-free and makes it clear which end goes on the outside. It even won a Gold Award from iF Design.
Cannabis Condoms

There are a lot of oddly-flavored condoms out there, from Nutella to Pepsi. But this one takes the cake (oh and there are cake-flavored ones, too). Cannabis-flavored condoms. These condoms are lubricated with mint and cannabis flavor. But, they won’t get you (or your private parts) high.
Perfect Fit Condoms

Condoms are not one-size-fits-all, but they’ve certainly been designed that way. For a long time, you had your magnums, your regulars and your slims. There weren’t many types of condoms when it came to sizing. Now, one company has designed custom-fit condoms. Their condoms are available in 10 lengths and 10 widths and a total of 66 different sizes. They even provide a little helpful sizing tool, if you need help picking out your fit.
