If you are a woman who has been struggling to boost your sex drive, wants some new ideas for the bedroom or is just feeling naughty, it could be time to grab a book of a different genre. A study published in the Journal of International Women’s Studies found that women who read steamy novels report having more active sex lives. It’s novels like these that give women the chance to explore their fantasies and learn about new ones — like the ones they might explore with a partner later.

For women, getting in the mood is mental and emotional as well as physical, and sometimes it takes the right story to get you there. Here are some new erotic novels for women by Black authors to pick up when you have the house to yourself.

If you’re looking for a short, fun, witty read that is the ideal mix of cute and steamy, pick up this book. It’s the perfect wish-fulfillment story, about single PTA mom Ava finally giving into her feelings for her child’s theater teacher, Jasper. The chemistry is palpable on the page and the ending is one most readers don’t see coming – but it’s definitely a satisfying short read for a sexy weekend getaway.

If you are looking for something unapologetically X-rated that you could never let a coworker see you reading, it’s this book. STIFF follows three best female friends looking for something a little extra on their usual girl’s night. So they venture into an upscale male strip club called The Den that turns out to be much more than a regular ladies club. From there, they each go onto explore their deepest and dirtiest fantasies, free of inhibitions.

Go Deep

In this somewhat meta novel, protagonist Navaya Howard is an author herself who writes erotic novels for women – but she’s in a rut and her readers have voiced as much. She’s been celibate for some time after discovering her ex was cheating on her. And she attempts a no-strings-attached arrangement with her male best friend Xander just to get her groove back and find something to write about. Of course, keeping the emotions out of it is easier said than done in this hot and heavy read.

Continuum

By Danielle Allen

Another missed-connections novel that will make you want to draw the curtains and possibly grab your favorite vibrating toy, Continuum is both steamy and heartfelt. It’s heavy on both the romance and the undeniably adult scenes between protagonist Aisha and love interest Kwame. The two first felt a spark when Aisha was Kwame’s tutor in college, and they get a second chance at love when they meet 16 years later. Aisha is a truly lovably imperfect woman that any reader could see themselves being best friends with. And Kwame’s genuine nature paired with undeniable charm makes you want to go “Awww” and “Rawrrr” at the same time.

It tells the story of Brianna Butler, who is more than ready to finally find Mr. Right after too many Mr. Wrongs. Butler daringly explores (with great detail by the author) her feelings for both men in scenes that will leave you sweating.
