What do Bigfoot and squirting have in common? The existence of either one is hotly debated. For each phenomenon, there are groups who will assure you that it’s real, that they’ve seen it, or that a friend saw it/experienced it. But, unlike with the Sasquatch, squirting is actually something experts have been able to study up close because anyone with a vulva is capable of squirting. So we can move squirting – sometimes called female ejaculation – from the category of “myth” and leave that to unicorns. It is very much real. What is still debated is what exactly squirting is.

If you’ve been curious about squeezing out your natural juices or wanted to experience it, here’s what MADAMENOIRE know about squirting.

Is It Real And Is It Pee?

First and foremost, squirting is a real thing and no, it’s not just pee. Well, sometimes it’s a little bit of pee, which we’ll get to. When a woman squirts, she releases a fluid from her urethra. This fluid contains a mixture of naturally-existing fluids that live in the body including urea, uric acid and creatinine. Each of these are waste products that are naturally made through several bodily processes. And technically, some of these also come out in your pee. What sets squirting apart is that it sometimes also contains something called prostatic secretions – a fluid similar to that which comes out of the prostate gland in men.

This fluid comes from something called the Skene’s glands, which sit at the lower end of the urethra. The actual squirting occurs typically when there is G-spot stimulation, clitoris stimulation, or both. Because the Skene’s glands sit near the G-spot, when it is stimulated, the glands can be as well, prompting the release of the fluids.

Is Female Ejaculation And Squirting The Same?

This is where some medical experts are still torn on what exactly squirting is. Many people use the term “squirting” and “female ejaculation” interchangeably. However, according to The National Library of Medicine, not all experts consider them one and the same.

When female ejaculation occurs, a few milliliters of a thick fluid is released. Meanwhile, when squirting happens, it’s more of a “massive transurethral orgasmic expulsion” from the bladder says the NLM. So it really comes down to the power and volume of the flow. If it was quite the shower, you squirted. If it was more like a small release of fluid, you ejaculated. Some medical professionals say the latter is actually a form of coital incontinence (bladder control issues that happen during intercourse).

How Many Women Squirt?

Technically speaking, any person who has a vulva has the mechanics to squirt. But, anecdotally, not all women have squirted. According to the International Society for Sexual Medicine, some reports show that between 10 and 50 percent of women have squirted, while others say that as many as 70 percent of women have done so.

How To Squirt

If you want to try to squirt, there are some tips to get you started – either on your own or with a partner. The first thing to do is locate your G-spot, since stimulation of this is the first step to squirting. You can use your fingers, or use a toy. The G-spot is located about an inch inside of the vagina, on the front of the vaginal canal (belly button side). It swells a bit and feels bumpy when you’re aroused, so it’s easiest to find once you’re turned on.

Because squirting is more likely to occur when there is G-spot and clitoral stimulation if you want to try it with a partner, intercourse actually isn’t the best way to do so. Instead, ask your partner to perform oral on you while putting their fingers inside of you – since a partner is far more likely to feel out your G-spot with their fingers than with their penis or a toy. However, if you want to try to squirt during sex, doggy style is reportedly the best position for this because the angle of the penis has the best chance for hitting the G-spot, and you can easily stimulate your clitoris in this position.

Remember to put down some towels if you plan on trying it since you might make a mess. And, if your partner is performing oral, if you can, let them know when you feel the big O coming – unless they don’t mind swallowing urea, uric acid and creatinine.
