What can we say — new year, new hair, new you. In honor of being our best selves and slaying the game in 2022, MADAMENOIRE got the inside scoop from licensed hairstylist and senior content manager for Mayvenn, Brittany Johnson, about this year’s top wig and hair extension trends.
Overall, Johnson shared that 2022 will be packed with fresh takes on throwback styles. Much like early in the pandemic, people will continue keeping their look versatile by experimenting with their hair at-home if they can’t reach their hairstylist and learning how to glam up their DYI protective styles.

Naturally-Inspired Protective Styles
Protective styles that enhance the beauty of one’s natural hair “are more popular than ever,” according to Johnson. The hairstylist explained that a look like the one above “blends seamlessly with the texture of a natural blowout,” so you can add some length to your healthy inches.

The Evolution of Ponytails
Ponytails will still be a convenient and stylish extension option this year. Whether using a drawstring version or one you DYI’d from your favorite bundle set, Johnson suggests “playing up your hairline” with baby hairs, headbands or clips after your natural hair has been slicked back and styled and your ponytail is attached.

Versatile Human Hair Clip-Ins
Johnson noted some of the major benefits of human hair clip-ins are they’re “extremely easy to DIY at home, and can even be styled before they’re installed.” Because of that, clip-ins like the straight yaki texture above can bring a ton of versatility to how you style your natural hair.
Consider wearing them “naturally smooth” for a pressed-out look or curled with a wand to “turn up the texture.”

Accessorized Headband Wigs
This rise in popularity of headband wigs during the pandemic is expected to hold its status in 2022. Johnson recommends having a variety of headbands to style your unit with and using “fun accessories” to play up your look and “dress it up or down.”

The Classic Middle-Part
It’s hard to go wrong with something as classic as a middle part. That said, it’s no surprise the look will continue being on-trend in 2022. As Johnson emphasized, “middle parts are timeless and complement a variety of face shapes and hair types.”
In addition to being a great way to frame your face while still allowing your features to show, the celebrity hairstylist pointed out middle parts also limit unnecessary styling time since side parts can be a bit more finicky.

Up Close & Personal with HD Wigs
This year, the demand for super realistic and natural-looking lace fronts will continue growing. As Johnson joked, “Transparency is great for relationships, but even better for hairlines.”
HD Lace wigs are unique due to their “thinner lace material.” It makes customing a hairline on a unit and achieving a natural-looking install more effortless than ever.
