You often hear about healthy bacteria in the body, like that which lives in the stomach, mouth, and, of course, vagina. When you grab a bottle of probiotics, it likely brags of having millions of healthy bacteria. But did you know that when it comes to your lady parts, there actually shouldn’t be that many species of bacteria existing? That is a particularly delicate ecosystem, and so much of what we do can throw it off. If you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection, bacterial vaginosis, or another condition that plagues women’s private parts, you know how uncomfortable and downright distracting it is. A toothache or stomachache would be preferred because at least it’s societally acceptable to complain about those to coworkers and even strangers. But when you have an issue downstairs, that typically stays between you and your gynecologist – you don’t get the release of venting about it much, so you need relief fast.
Between synthetic fabric, pads and tampons, sexual intercourse, and just the general environment, our vaginas can go through a lot. We keep products on hand to fortify our guts, skin, and much more, so why not our lady parts? Here are products that are gentle for your vagina, can help it stay healthy, and in some cases just relieve frustrating symptoms of certain conditions.
Summer’s Eve Cleansing Cloths
As a woman, you know you can feel particularly unclean during that time of the month. You try to stay on top of changing your pads and tampons in a timely manner, but you also have a life to live, so sometimes a pad stays in there long enough to create an odor. Summer’s Eve Cleansing Cloths are made so as to not disturb the pH balance down there and have been tested by gynecologists. They’re so easy to toss in a handbag or even a coat pocket and bring anywhere, so you can freshen up between pad or tampon changes. Keep in mind that the fragrance-free option is probably the best, as the scented varieties can irritate the area down there.

Fur oil
Fur oil makes no attempt to be coy about what it is: it’s oil for your pubic hairs. While you may think that most women remove their pubic hairs through shaving, sugaring, waxing, or other means, that’s not true for everyone. In fact, one survey found that a good deal of women still like to keep things natural down there. And, like the hair on your head, it can be nice to keep your pubes moisturized. If you do keep your bush grown out, then you likely know that the skin beneath it can become dry and flaky. Fur oil contains ingredients that can hydrate the skin, like vitamin E, and has been tested by both dermatologists and gynecologists for your peace of mind. Do note that it contains peppermint and tea tree oil, which are wonderful natural deodorizers, but can irritate any exposed cuts or scratches on the skin. Do not use it if you’ve recently cut yourself shaving because it will sting like a mother.

DeoDoc pre-shave oil
One study looked into the main reasons women shave their pubic hair. Those surveyed reported often doing so to make oral sex more pleasurable. Others said it made them feel more feminine. A good deal said they did it because their partners like the way it feels. Whatever your reason, you know that shaving down there on a regular basis can be rough on the skin. In the same way men put shaving cream on their beard before shaving it to moisturize the skin, you can lather up the hair down there before taking it off. DeoDoc pre-shave oil contains ingredients like Shea butter and sunflower oil that hydrate the skin and create a protective barrier before putting a razor to the area.

Thinx for All Period Better Panties
Statistics show that women use pads far more than tampons. Perhaps that could be partially due to fear around toxic shock syndrome (though research finds it to be rare). There can be many reasons women don’t use tampons as much. Complications after birth can make tampons uncomfortable or even unsafe. Recovering from a procedure like a LEEP procedure or cervical biopsy can make tampons off-limits, leaving women with just pads as an option. But pads can be a nuisance. They’re bulky. They make noise when you walk. The adhesive can irritate the skin. So for those who don’t or can’t use tampons and are tired of pads, period panties are where it’s at. We particularly like these from Thinx. They’re made with organic cotton, are flexible for comfort, don’t look massive underneath clothing, and can be machine washed. They come in two absorbencies of moderate and super.

Kind Cup Menstrual Cup
Even though studies have proven menstrual cups to be safe and effective, and one survey that had women try them out found 73 percent wanted to continue using cups after the study, tampons and pads still remain the most popular feminine hygiene products. Women have their reasons, of course, including the fear that a menstrual cup requires too much contact with genitals, that cups can be rigid and uncomfortable, and sometimes they can be the wrong size. Kind Cup has addressed all of those concerns in their menstrual cup. It comes in two sizes, is ergonomically designed to go with the natural shape of a woman’s body, is extremely flexible, and has a long stem for easy removal. It just might convert you to a cup user.

The Killer
The Killer sounds aggressive but it kills just what you want it to: the bad stuff that causes yeast infections. It’s made with pharmaceutical-grade boric acid, which helps restore your vagina’s natural acidity levels as well as balance helpful bacteria called flora. When suffering a yeast infection, insert one of these suppositories into your vagina every night at bedtime for at least seven days and up to 14. They can alleviate discomfort and odor, and can be particularly useful after sexual activity, the last day of your period, or any time smell is bothering you. Of course, if you are experiencing those symptoms, you should also speak to your gynecologist right away, but this can alleviate symptoms while you’re waiting for your full course of treatment.

Lola Ultra Thin Condoms
Condoms can be uncomfortable for both men and women, and if you’re in that stage of the relationship when you’re doing it all of the time, you know it’s hard for your body’s naturally produced lubricant to keep up with all of the friction. These condoms are pre-coated with gynecologist approved lubricant and are as thin as the name suggests to maximize pleasure, while not sacrificing anything on safety. They’re FDA-approved, made with natural latex, and low in fragrance so as to eliminate that awkward smell that lingers in the air after all-day sex sessions. Plus, they’re free of irritants like parabens, glycerin, and casein.

The Clue App
Okay this is admittedly not a product but rather an app, but it is a must-have on the smartphone of any woman trying to get in control of her menstruation, ovulation, and more. In addition to notifying you when you are about to menstruate or ovulate, it also helps you track how your body changes during these times. It allows you to monitor and record facts about your digestion, skin health, moods, pain, and more during menstruation and ovulation so you can be prepared to be proactive about them in the future. If you become pregnant, it also helps you track things like the baby’s movement and your symptoms, and provides helpful articles for expectant moms.

Garden of Life Raw Probiotics
Like your gut, your vagina relies on a specific and delicate balance of healthy bacteria to maintain good health. But most of our modern diets don’t help us out there. This supplement contains raw fruits and veggies that offer prebiotics, which promote the growth of healthy bacteria. It has a proprietary vaginal care blend of 38 probiotics, including L. acidophilus and bifidobacterium, is gluten-free, soy-free, and non-GMO. If you are hoping to improve digestion, its probiotics and prebiotics also improve gut health so you can fortify two systems through one product. Please note it does contain egg and milk so while it is vegetarian-friendly, it is not vegan.

VMagic Cream
Irritation, redness, itchiness, dryness, and inflammation are symptoms most women will experience down south at many points in their lives. Between shaving, waxing, moving around, having sex, and more, we put the area through a lot, and as a result, it can become irritated. This organic cream hydrates the area without disrupting the pH balance. It contains a pure and short ingredients list that contains natural moisturizers such as olive oil and honey and is designed for sensitive skin. It also has antibacterial propolis and protective beeswax, allowing it to be safe for all skin types. If you have insecurities about your odor down there, it can help minimize that, too.
