If you’re a stay-at-home mom or a mom who dreams of leaving her corporate job behind, you may be wondering if it’s possible to be at home with your kids while also generating income. The answer is yes! Many moms are ditching their consuming full-time jobs for part-time and freelance gigs that they can work from home. And before you start rolling your eyes, we’re not talking about signing up for sketchy multi-level marketing programs.
Full-time working motherhood has not been kind to all of us. Working forty-plus hours each week then coming home to carry the bulk of the childrearing responsibilities in addition to household chores is extremely taxing. So much so that moms have been leaving the workforce in droves to preserve their sanity and to keep from physically burning out. While some chose full-blown stay-at-home motherhood, others are getting creative with some of these popular side hustles for stay-at-home moms.
Bookkeeper
If you’re highly organized, pay close attention to detail, and are good with numbers, bookkeeping may be the perfect side hustle for you. Small business owners are everywhere and while they’re out running their companies, they need attentive people like you to keep track of their daily business transactions with accuracy. Best of all, you don’t need an accounting background to become a bookkeeper. If this sounds like a good fit for you, you can check sites like Fiverr and UpWork to see what bookkeeping gigs are available today.

Dog walking and dog sitting
Do you have a soft side for furry friends on four legs? Do your kids love animals? Live in a dog-friendly community? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, dog walking or dog sitting may be an ideal fit. There are many people who either don’t have the time to walk their dogs as frequently as they’d like or want to vacation but have nowhere to take their pets. If you already have some potential clients in mind, you may want to just go ahead and start your own dog-walking business. But if you need help connecting with potential customers, try apps like Wag! and Rover.

Virtual assistant
Virtual assistants are a hot commodity these days, especially in light of the present COVID-19 pandemic. Virtual assistants do everything that a regular assistant would with a few exceptions. They offer their clients administrative, creative, or tech-related assistance from the comfort of their homes. Classic job posting platforms like Glassdoor and Indeed advertise virtual assistant jobs in addition to freelancer platforms like Fiverr and UpWork.

Childcare
Not all moms have the ability to or are even interested in being stay-at-home moms. Those moms are always looking for a trusted, patient, and kind childcare professional who can look after their children while they’re at work — or working in the home. If you have a background in education or you’re good with kids, that sounds like you, sis.

Freelance writing
If people have told you that you have a way with words, freelance writing may be a profession to explore while home with the kids. The beauty of freelancing is that you’re essentially your own boss. While you have to work with editors, you are in charge of your time and have the ability to determine how much or how little you work.

Copy editing
As a spin-off to the freelance writing option, you may also want to consider becoming a freelance copy editor. Many authors are choosing to self-publish their work as opposed to going through publishers, which means that they will need to hire copy editors to help polish their manuscripts. Additionally, many companies hire freelance copy editors to review corporate communication and marketing materials.

Meal prep
Do you binge-watch shows like Top Chef and Chopped? Are you the person who relatives and friends always call on to make a pan of macaroni and cheese or empanadas for all of the functions? There are moms everywhere who don’t have the time to prepare nutritious meals for their families every night but also do not want to feed their kids takeout, which is where you could come in. Fellow moms would love to hire you to meal prep for them.

Teacher
If you have a teaching background, the work-from-home opportunities are abundant. You have the option of virtually teaching English to children from other countries and adjunct teaching at local colleges — both virtually and in-person classes. The time required to adjunct teach is nothing in comparison to being a full-time teacher. Additionally, many companies are looking for professionals with backgrounds in education to run corporate training sessions.

Homework helper/tutor
Many moms who work outside of the home are simply too burnt out to closely supervise their child’s academics as they would like, but you can help by offering after-school tutoring and homework help to children in your community. You can take things a step further by acting as a liaison between the parents of the kids you service and their teachers.
