When you’re in the market for a new home, there is a slew of factors to consider when making a choice. Is it within commuting distance to your place of employment? Are the schools good? What is the crime rate? What are the property taxes like? Is it a family-friendly area? And that’s only touching the tip of the iceberg. Ironically, one thing that can make or break your experience in a neighborhood is the actual neighbors. And unfortunately, you are typically unaware of what you’re going to get until you are fully settled into your home.
Most of the time, you’ll find that your neighbors are extremely sweet, kind, and helpful. But there is almost always a wild card in the bunch that will have you ready to put your home back on the market within a couple of years of purchasing it. Here are the top 10 worst neighbors ranked. Let us know in the comments if there’s a neighbor we may have missed.

1. The Karen
Neighbors with Karen-like qualities are potentially the worst type of neighbor because of the threat that they pose to community members of color. They use 9-1-1 as if it is a customer service line and weaponize local police in order to keep their Black and brown neighbors “in line.” They harass people and as we’ve witnessed in one too many viral videos in recent years, they demand that their darker neighbors provide proof that they live in a community. Karens are, by far, the worst neighbors.

2. The Petty Patty
Another highly toxic neighbor is the Petty Patty. “Love thy neighbor” is a commandment by which she simply refuses to abide. On a good day, you can catch her ringing doorbells trying to figure out who had the nerve to park in front of her house. On her worst day, you can catch her firing off nuisance lawsuits against her neighbors over trivial matters such as privacy fences and dogs barking.

3. The Enforcer
The Enforcer is typically someone who is vying for a seat on the Homeowner’s Association. They are extremely power-hungry and find immense pleasure in harassing residents regarding the most menial items in the HOA handbook. It’s not uncommon to catch them measuring grass or comparing front doors to paint swatches to ensure that everyone has their doors painted the right shade of blue. They are infamous for spying on residents on behalf of board members. Quite literally, the neighbor from hell.

4. The Slob
Of course, not all HOAs are bad. Some are absolutely amazing and you’ll definitely wish that your community had one if you happen to live in close proximity to The Slob. Generally speaking, The Slob is a good person at heart, but when it comes to maintaining their property’s curb appeal, they fall short. The signature moves include overflowing trash cans, junk in their front yard, extremely unmanicured lawns, and garages that would put any hoarder to shame. In addition to the more obvious issue of attracting rodents and other pests to the neighborhood, these types of homeowners can lower the neighborhood’s property value.

5. The Neighborhood Gossip
It’s impossible to live near people for years without learning at least a little bit of their personal business. But The Neighborhood Gossip makes it her business to know everyone’s business. Worse, she doesn’t stop there. Anytime she gets any little bit of information about a neighbor, she’s like a dog with a bone, carrying it to anyone else who will listen.

6. The Nosy Neighbor
Not to be confused with The Neighborhood Gossip, The Nosy Neighbor generally only wants to know your business for her personal reference — not to broadcast it or use it to embarrass you in front of the other neighbors. You can typically catch The Nosy Neighbor peeking at you through her kitchen window, staring from her lawn any time you have visitors, and asking highly intrusive questions, such as how much you paid for your house.

7. The Negative Nancy
The Negative Nancy is your local pessimist who will always see the glass as half empty. She generally means well, however, run-ins with this neighbor are rarely filled with polite pleasantries. She’s going to remind you of everything that is wrong with the neighborhood while downplaying what’s going well. If you were already having doubts about your newly purchased home, the Negative Nancy will push you over the edge.

8. The Neighborhood Grouch
Not to be confused with Negative Nancy, The Neighborhood Grouch stays mad. He is usually the neighbor who refuses to speak to you unless it’s to complain that your kids are playing too loudly or that your guests parked in front of his house. He should literally invest in a lawn sign that reads: “Does not work well with others.” He hates having neighbors and if he could have things his way, he’d be living on an island by himself.

9. The Social Butterfly
The Social Butterfly is the life of the party. You can typically catch her planning the neighborhood block party or coordinating neighborhood-wide efforts after a resident has suffered a tragedy. Everyone loves her and she’s harmless; however, her social life can create some minor annoyances for her fellow neighbors, such as loud get-togethers and limited street parking on Friday nights because her gaggle of friends refuses to carpool.

10. The Nighthawk
While not an extremely common or problematic neighbor, if you happen to live near The Nighthawk, you know why he made this list. The Nighthawk may struggle to sleep at night so he tinkers, listens to loud music, and laughs loudly as he watches reruns of his favorite ’90s sitcom. While generally harmless, The Nighthawk can be a huge nuisance for light sleepers.
