Things The Pandemic Taught Us We Can Live Without

Studies have found people are actually happiest when they break away from their traditional way of doing things. And yet, we really are creatures of habit. We do certain things a certain way because that’s how it’s always been done. Going against the norm or developing a new routine can seem overwhelming, so people get stuck in their patterns. “That’s just the way it is.” How often do you hear that? But why is it like that? There were so many ways humans went about life before the pandemic because nobody stopped to ask, “But is there another way?” or “Is this necessary?” Though it can feel wrong to say something good came out of this widespread health crisis, perhaps it’s worse to say that nothing did and to not acknowledge the positive things that were borne from it. Maybe some of those include all the ways we learned we could do things differently because we had to. Necessity is the mother of innovation and wow did we have to innovate to get through the last year.
Perhaps there were many things that, before the pandemic, you may have said, “I can’t live without that.” But then, you had to and…you survived, didn’t you? Maybe you were even forced to find an alternative way to go about things, and that alternative proved to be better than the original way. Even when we get a handle on this virus and life can return to “normal,” many things might not go back the way they were because we learned a better way. Here are things the pandemic taught us we could live without.

A 9-to-5 schedule
Maybe the world was already coming around to the silliness of the arbitrary 9-to-5 schedule, but the pandemic really brought the point home. With most professionals working from home and homeschooling kids, getting work done during any set of rigid hours became out of the question. Work got done when it got done and companies didn’t crumble.

Arbitrary professionalism
The body language. The verbal language. The stiffness. Remember all the ways you had to be “professional” before when you spoke with clients or bosses or coworkers? That all become so irrelevant and unnecessary when people had to work from home. When your naked toddler is bound to walk through the back of your Zoom call and your spouse will be heard baby-talking your dog in the background of a meeting, why are we wasting time trying to be uber professional? It turns out we can show our humanity and still get business taken care of.

In-person training
If you’ve ever driven an hour in traffic to some conference room at a chain hotel and paid $15 for parking to attend mandatory training for your work, the pandemic probably really left you wondering how necessary that was. Somehow, that same training occurred this year, over Zoom. You just opened your laptop from your kitchen table. You absorbed the same information. The company continues to run smoothly. Why were you in a ballroom at a Ramada last year again?

Multiple cars per household
The pandemic has had several interesting effects on driving habits and road safety – both good and bad. But one thing is for sure: we’re driving less. Way less. For many households, driving has been limited to essential activities like going to the grocery store or the doctor, leaving some cars collecting dust in garages for months at a time. If you’re part of a multi-car household, you may have realized…you don’t need that many cars. And you certainly save a lot of money by eliminating car payments and their associated insurance policies.

The $15 movie tickets
At first, you may have really missed the movie theaters. They are certainly an experience. But they’re also getting incredibly expensive. The average cost of a movie ticket in America has just shy of doubled since 2001 when it was slightly over $5. The pandemic taught us that, for the price of a movie ticket today, we can buy monthly subscription services like Disney Plus that stream movies as soon as they come out, in our homes. It will probably have you rethinking that $13.85 ticket when most theaters reopen — if they do.

Lots of friends
We wrote extensively about the pandemic-specific conflicts causing friendship breakups here. But even if a full-on breakup didn’t happen, did you notice your core friend group shrink? So many of our friendships may have relied on things like a shared place to meet up. Many relied on shared acquaintances and an obligation to be nice. Now, you probably just speak to the people who really make your life better because there’s too much going on to keep up with those who don’t. So you only stay in touch with those with whom you genuinely enjoy having a simple conversation. You may have realized there were a few people in your circle whose friendship requires a lot more than you have to give these days.

Keeping up appearances
Reports on this are a mixed bag. You may have heard about people complaining that they haven’t been able to get their lip injections or Botox injections done during the pandemic. Meanwhile, reports show the industry for facial injections is on the rise. But, for those who chose not to risk contracting the coronavirus all over a lines-free forehead, they likely learned one thing: the world didn’t stop spinning. This is also true for many things like trying to keep up professional hair and nail appointments. So many individuals haven’t been getting them, and what they’ve found is, they’re still looking and feeling just fine. In addition to that, their bank accounts are doing better because of it.

Traveling for work
Booking an employee a $400 plane ticket and $600 hotel stay all to meet with clients or partners across the country or world seems pretty silly now that companies just, well, haven’t had to do so and things still moved forward. It turns out that you can sweet-talk a potential client over Zoom, and that costs a lot less than domestic or international travel. It also means that traditionally traveling professionals can spend more time with their families.

Our job titles holding so much importance in our lives
For many, the pandemic was about surviving rather than thriving. Career dreams were slashed in an instant. Maybe your short film script won multiple awards and got funding and then all filming had to be canceled due to COVID-19. With so many people losing their livelihoods, we realized that we are not and can not be our jobs. We are not our careers. Our identity has everything to do with how we treat one another and cherish relationships and little to do with what we put on our tax returns. I think a lot of people learned that during this pandemic.

High-end or frequent home care services
Housekeepers, personal chefs, nannies, certainly these professions are of great importance to a number of people. However, many individuals may have learned that they can do without a bi-weekly housekeeper because they had to do without one. And they learned they can cut up their own fruit salads and wash their own clothes because they had to. Don’t be too concerned for cleaning companies losing residential clients: they’re still seeing a boom in the commercial department.

Toilet paper
Well, we did it. We survived the toilet paper shortage. Everyone had their ways and maybe some had to get creative, but in the end, was there any major loss due to a temporary shortage of TP? b. And empty shelves soon returned to being full. We discovered the beauty of the bidet and other options. Maybe we realized we used too many squares before, and now that toilet paper is back in full stock, we’ll adjust, and save some trees. And if nothing else, we’ll know that we can’t hoard it the way that we did early in the pandemic.

Hard clothes
Jeans. Blazers. Button-up shirts. Pencil skirts. These are a part of the arbitrary professionalism we’ve realized is so ridiculous. We’ve all conducted important meetings over Zoom now wearing hooded sweatshirts, robes, and even been in our pajamas, and the meetings didn’t suffer for them. In fact, maybe it was good to show that personal side to colleagues and clients. Or maybe, when lucky, no one even noticed that you were wearing the same clothes you slept in when you didn’t have time to get freshened up before your 9 a.m. meeting. Here’s to wearing more hoodies and tights to important board meetings.
