During an interview with Fox Soul talk show host Dr. Sean McMillan, singer Angie Stone appeared much smaller than most people have ever seen her look. The 58-year-old broke through the music industry in the late ’90s and early ’00s as part of the Neo-Soul movement, and during that time, she became a star at a much heavier size. She told Dr. McMillan that she was a diabetic, had chronic high blood pressure, even sarcoidosis. To deal with the latter health concern, she was put on a high dosage of steroids, which caused her to become the size people were used to seeing her at. However, she said she was the size she is now before fame.

“Nobody knew me at this size. Only the people that signed me and the people that worked with me knew, she was always a really tiny girl,” she said, noting that once her relationship with singer D’Angelo became known, her weight and looks became a bigger focus than expected.

“By the time ‘No More Rain’ came out, I was 230 pounds. And then I was in love with a sex symbol, and he was fine, and everybody was looking like, ‘How did she get he?'” she said. “What they didn’t realize is he had seen me smaller. So he knew also the steroid issue. I wasn’t being loved or judged by my weight. It was the inner spirit that they were in love with.”

Stone said comments about her made keeping that relationship afloat even harder than it already was. After “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” everyone wanted D’Angelo. Though they had a son together, their relationship would end for a variety of reasons, not just outside strain. Stone told Dr. McMillan though that she “will always love” him. He is the greatest love she’s had in fact.

“When you’ve experienced true love, real love, it never dies,” she said. “Even though you go your separate ways and life goes on for everyone and you take different paths, you never ever forget the purest of love. That was a genuine love that no one has ever been able to compete with.”

Stone said during her interview that while there are people who prefer her with a little more weight on her, she’s happy with where she is now. She is pictured here in 1993.

“I am now diabetic-free,” she said. “And I don’t care how phat they want me to be, I am fine now because I’m healthier.”

She said that she was able to get back down to the size she is now because she stopped eating meat for two years. The more she learned about the process of getting meats from farms to table, she was grossed out. However, a major dip in protein that impacted her kidneys caused her to reincorporate meat into her diet sometimes.

“God just blessed me to take me back down to that little girl who started out, but that came with obedience. That came with discipline. Eating less of the fatty foods and putting down the dead animals.”

When she speaks of D’Angelo, Stone talks lovingly of her ex and the father of her son, Michael Archer, Jr.. She said that while she’s had some good and bad relationships, when it comes to true love, she had it with the beloved crooner.

“There has been great lovers, but when you’re talking about the core of love, I will always love him,” she said. “No matter how pissed off I get. He’s still the bomb dot com. He’s a genius, and uh, he’s my baby daddy. I got to respect that.”

Her relationship at that time with D’Angelo put a target on her back in terms of receiving unwanted opinions about her size and her looks, including her skin tone.

“When I was in that lane, it was a cruel reality,” she said of people criticizing her and their relationship. “A lot of people began to fight against that because of the weight issue and because I was a dark-skinned girl with full lips. To them, that just didn’t go together.”

She noted though that before he was mainstream big, he was literally big, too.

“But what they didn’t understand was he was overweight at one point,” she said. “They just didn’t see that part.”

“When they see him or anybody with weight on they immediately go, ‘Oh my God! What happened?'” she said of how people reacted when D’Angelo gained weight and faced legal issues years after the height of his success with “How Does It Feel, where he sported serious abs. “Well you have to look at the history of a person. Who they become and who they are naturally is one in the same, but we go through phases in life.”

Stone has said that D’Angelo wasn’t the only fine man who has tried hard to vie for her affections. She told MadameNoire that Idris Elba tried to shoot his shot as well while appearing in her video for “I Wanna Thank You.”

“The sad part about it is I wasn’t checking for him like that,” she said. “And he was like, you know, we were very good friends, we had the same accountant, same manager, and for a very long time, he made it very public that he was in love with Angie Stone.”

Stone said that after her experience being with D’Angelo and all that came with loving a super fine man, she couldn’t handle Elba.

“I had already been with D’Angelo,” she said. “I didn’t know what to do with these good looking guys digging Angie Stone.”

Looking back on that time, she did admit that she regretted not giving one of PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive winners a chance.

She came close though when the actor turned his swag on for her when they were working on the video.

“There is one weak moment that I had because I have a thing for beautiful teeth,” she said. “And he came to the door, and I opened the door, and he was twirling this toothpick around in his teeth. And I fell on the side of the door like, ‘OK, what’s happening to me?'”

As for her weight loss, she is just glad to be healthy and happy, especially with her deep family history of diabetes. The disease has ravaged her loved ones and she no longer has to worry about it.

“The reality is, my mom has diabetes. My aunt died with diabetes. My cousins have diabetes,” she said. “I am now diabetic-free. I no longer have to take insulin, the pills or anything.”
