One of the best things about the sitcom Girlfriends was the fact that it showed the reality of the wide variety of dating and serious relationships Black women can find themselves in. The suitors didn’t stick around for full seasons unless they were married to our favorite girls (or guy in William), and they didn’t work out for important as well as petty reasons (sometimes dating a guy with bigger hips than you and a clingy personality is not the way to go). The guys were all very different, both in personality and appearance. I always appreciated the show’s depiction of a Black woman’s romantic life, and was reminded of it as the entire series premiered on Netflix.
Because I tend to like to find out where people are and what they’ve got going on, I wondered where the guys and girls who played partners to the cast and were a part of the show, even for a short time, have been. After doing some digging, I thought I’d update you on a few of our favorites.
(Note: Some of the more well-known actors who portrayed love interests will not be on this list. We know where Malik Yoba and Idris Elba have been, okay?)

Dondre Whitfield
The actor played Sean Ellis for 11 episodes from 2001 to 2002. Sean was Joan’s recovering sex addict boyfriend whom she struggles to have an intimate relationship due to his past. They break up after he asks Joan to move to New York and she decides not to.
The handsome actor has been married to the beauty Salli Richardson-Whitfield since 2002. His most recent role was playing Remy on the OWN hit Queen Sugar since it started.

Chuma Gault
Actor Chuma Gault played Greg, the starving artist that Toni Childs loved. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop her from cheating on him. When he found out, he dumped her, but took her back only so that he could get revenge for her betrayal. Cold blooded.
Some of Gault’s most recent roles include playing the husband of Zoe Saldana’s Nina Simone in Nina, as well as the short-lived drama Game of Silence with Larenz Tate, and playing Jimmy on Days of Our Lives. Behind the camera, he was also an assistant director for the popular HBO series The Newsroom back in 2012. Girlfriends seems to be what people know him best from.

Keesha Sharp
Sharp played the often difficult Monica, girlfriend of William Dent, eventually becoming his wife. While the ladies initially can’t stand her, she slowly but surely becomes a part of the group — especially after Toni Childs, played by Jill Marie Jones, left the series after Season 6. She and William split for a while after he drunkenly confesses he had doubts about marrying her (on their wedding day, y’all), and he eventually wins her back.
Sharp most recently was a star on the Fox hit Lethal Weapon, which featured Damon Wayans (whom she played the wife of). She was also on a few episodes of the last season of Empire, as well as on The Good Fight on CBS.

Khalil Kain
The actor, well-known and drooled over for his work in the film Juice, played Darnell Wilkes from 2001 to 2008. He was the husband of Maya Wilkes, and divorced her after she had an affair. When he attempts to move on and marry someone new, Maya professes her love for him during his wedding. They would get back together and think about adoption after suffering a miscarriage.
Some of Kain’s recent work includes the TV series Bronx SIU from 2019, as well as the series Be Someone. He was also in a film called Coming to Africa and recently completed filming of a movie called The Friend Zone.

Jason Pace
Actor Jason Pace (pictured above with his beautiful daughter) played Dr. Todd Garrett, the plastic surgeon husband of Toni Childs. Make that the white, Jewish plastic surgeon. The two would struggle in their marriage, and Todd would decide to pick up and move to New York as they chose to separate. After finding out she’s pregnant with his child, she gives birth to their daughter and they end up fighting over custody of the child. After working through things, Toni would end up moving to New York so that Todd could be closer to their child.
After appearing on the show from 2002 to 2006, Pace got more into voice acting. He contributed his voice to movies Happy Feet Two, as well as Sing and the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. His most recent role was a movie called Collection in 2020.

Adrian Lester
Who could forget Joan’s actor boyfriend Ellis? He was a big star whose lifestyle and initial desire to retain his bachelor image brought a lot of stress to her life. It also didn’t help that he ended up getting his ex pregnant, an ex that he ended up working with on a project that he didn’t tell Joan about. Though the two would end up working through their problems, she would fall in love with Ellis’s agent, Brock (played by Malik Yoba). She and Ellis would break it off after she confessed that she cheated on him with Brock.
Lester is a big actor in the U.K. and the States. He most recently appeared in the movie Mary Queen of Scots as well as the show The Rook and the mini-series Life.

Cee Cee Michaela
Before Monica, William Dent was in love with a feisty (aka, a little crazy) police officer named Yvonne. The two struggle with her work after she gets shot. After he pops the question, she decides to quit the force. But as wedding planning goes on, things get complicated because William doesn’t tell his mother about his relationship with Yvonne. When the wedding eventually goes forward, Yvonne leaves William at the altar.
Cee Cee hasn’t really been on the big or small screen since 2004 when she was in the movie Hair Show. But you can catch her doing interviews on Instagram Live.

Rodney Van Johnson
Rodney played Joan’s thick boo Marcus in the first season of the show. She met him on the Internet and they hit it off, but she’s completely turned off by the fact that he wears a girdle to cover up his wide hips. Joan tries to let that go, but is further turned off by the fact that Marcus is clingy. They eventually move on from each other after the girls are encouraged to try to put bad bugs in his ear to make Joan look and sound like a hot mess.
After Girlfriends, the actor became a reality star, appearing on Kim Whitley’s heartwarming OWN series, Raising Whitley. He was on the NBC Soap Passions from its inception, and most recently was in the TV movie One Fine Christmas last year.

Saul Williams
Real life poet Saul Williams played a poet named Sivad on the show who dated Lynn. Now, while Lynn was always a sexually free character, Sivad was celibate, which was something she struggled with. Also a struggle for them was the fact that Sivad was uncomfortable with her crashing at William’s place knowing that they’d had a sexual relationship in the past.
Behind the camera, Saul ended up marrying Persia White, who played Lynn, after they dated for five years following them meeting on the set of the show. She shared that they split in 2009. The popular poet recently starred in a drama called Akilla’s Escape.

Don Franklin
Couldn’t stand Stan Wright. Don Franklin played the character of Stan, the guy that Maya helps to get a job and ends up having an emotional affair with. When she realizes, after sharing a kiss with him, that they’d gone too far, she tries to break things off. Unfortunately, Stan’s crazy behind befriends her husband Darnell and threatens to tell him about what they had going on. Darnell ends up finding out anyway and it costs Maya her marriage.
Franklin, who kind of reminds us of Blair Underwood, most recently appeared on the TV series Shooter, Bosch, and played a character named Malcolm on Insecure. (Anybody remember that one?)

Phil Morris
When Toni Childs was struggling with Greg’s low income, she found herself instantly attracted to Dr. Clay Spencer. He seemed to have it going on on paper, but unfortunately, he would end up giving Toni chlamydia. Just ghetto. But he seems to feel something serious for her, asking for her hand in marriage, a proposal she accepts. Toni has a change of heart though after she realizes, with Joan’s help, that she really and truly loves Greg. Too bad he finds out she cheated on him with Clay!
Phil Morris, who has appeared on a whole host of sitcoms over the years (including playing Mr. Bozack on Martin), appeared on Kenya Barris’s #BlackAF this year, and has done quite a bit of voice acting in 2020 alone.

John L. Adams
Remember Vosco?
He was Lynn’s boyfriend from Jamaica who, like her, didn’t have anything going on and was crashing (secretly) in Joan’s place. They eventually moved into a garage together, but Vosco isn’t interested in working and is someone to take care of rather than a boyfriend. They officially call the whole thing off after Vosco gets Lynn a dog, somebody else to take care of, for Christmas, and she criticizes him over it.
The actor who played Vosco was comedian John L. Adams. After appearing on a few shows here and there after Girlfriends, he ended up being one of the stars of the TV show Dead Zone from 2002 to 2007. These days he’s doing stand-up shows.
