No matter your fitness goals – whether it’s to lose weight, maintain weight, put purer foods in your body, or keep up with exercise routines – we could all use a little help and a little encouragement. Even just staying organized can be difficult when you’re meal prepping and keeping track of whether it’s leg day or butt day. And when you can’t afford a personal trainer or regular sessions with a nutritionist, finding that outside motivation and that extra push to keep you on track can be difficult.

Luckily, we live in a world where most of the help you need fits in the palm of your hand. Literally, thanks to the development of apps, you can turn on your phone and get most of the guidance you need on everything from career tips to mental wellness to healthy eating to budgeting and beyond. We’ve gathered a list of some of the best apps that help you eat healthier, and keep track of your progress. We’ve included a good range of apps that offer different features, so nearly anyone, regardless of the focus, can find something useful on this list.

Shopwell

Shopwell helps you make sure that your food goals and grocery shopping habits are aligned. Simply input your food sensitivities, nutrition goals, and fitness goals into the app. Then scan the barcode of your food items in store, and it will give you a detailed look at how that food fits in with your goals. It’s worth noting that, while most major grocery stores are set up to work with the app, Trader Joe’s isn’t.

Noom

Noom dives into the psychological and emotional reasons behind why we eat what we eat. Through its team of doctors, nutritionists, and other experts, it helps you understand what motivates you. In addition to expected features like calorie and activity trackers, it also helps you develop better shopping habits, develop a healthier view of food (forget “good” and “bad” food), and create meal plans, all while enjoying daily exercise and prompts to further explore your emotional relationship to food.

MealPrepPro

To set up your MealPrepPro account, you’ll provide information about yourself including your height, weight, age, and preferred diet (i.e. vegan, paleo, keto etc.). From there, the app will generate shopping lists and recipes for you. It will also provide supplementary cooking videos, so you can easily learn how to make the recipes it suggests.

VNutrition

VNutrition is a smart app for new vegans who are concerned that their plant-based diet won’t get them the nutrients they need. It was created by the Vegan Society and contains tips and data from registered nutritionists, and helps you track the nutrients you’re getting from your vegan food items, and find ways to get all of the nutrients you need.

MakeMyPlate

MakeMyPlate is good for busy individuals who don’t have time to create menus and shopping lists. Just input your nutritional requirements and fitness goals, and it will generate a meal plan and complimentary shopping list for you. It can also tell you what to order at major chain restaurants, so you can stay on track while you’re out.

Change4Life Food Scanner

If you need serious help cutting salty and sugary foods, this app can help. Just scan the barcode of the food you’re purchasing, and it will tell you exactly how much sugar, salt, and saturated fat is in it. It will also provide a photo of that amount of each of those – so you’ll see a pile of sugar, salt, or fat, which can be great at deterring you from eating that packaged muffin.

Food Intolerances

If you’re new to struggling with a food intolerance or just got your diagnosis, determining which foods you should eat and which ones you should avoid isn’t always easy. And one misstep can lead to major consequences. This app can tell you which foods are safe or a no-go for dozens of common food intolerances.

See How You Eat

If you’re trying to get better at keeping a food diary, the See How You Eat App can help. At its most basic level, it’s a photo food journal. You take photos of every food item you eat, and it tracks them for you, including the date and time you consumed them. It also lets you add notes, like how much of it you finished and why you ate it. And it includes motivational messages to keep you on track.

My Diet Coach

My Diet Coach is rich with features that both help you eat healthier and stay on track with exercise goals. It lets you create an avatar and watch her thrive as you do the app’s daily challenges (like take the stairs, or eat more veggies), enjoy its motivational quotes, track your food and exercise, and take advantage of its useful reminders (like those that tell you to drink more water). It even has a food craving panic button you can push when you’re craving unhealthy foods, and it will provide you with tools to curb that craving.

Lifesum

Lifesum helps you understand your total calories consumed and expended. You’ll log your food intake and your exercise (type and duration), and the app will determine how many calories you’ve consumed and burned. It also gives a full nutritional breakdown of your meals and will show you if you’ve developed new eating trends.

MyPlate Calories Tracker

MyPlate Calories Tracker can help give you a useful overview of your eating habits. In addition to containing the nutritional information on millions of food items, it also creates graphs that show you how your habits are progressing over time. It records water intake, macronutrients, and calories for you.

Waterlogged

Knowing how much water you’ve had throughout the day isn’t easy. Unless you’re someone who carries around a giant jug with measurements marked onto it, how are you to know whether or not you’ve reached your hydration goals? This simple app lets you take a photo of your beverages, and tracks how many fluids you’ve had throughout the day.

Carbs Control

Carbs Control is a good app for those who want to do just what the name implies – monitor carbohydrate intake. Its database can tell you how many carbohydrates are in the foods that you eat. It also works as a sort of food journal, creating a log of the foods you input. Its charts show you both your daily carb intake, and your meal-by-meal breakdown.

Eat This Much

Eat This Much will help you optimize your time and budget while reaching your fitness goals. You input what your fitness goals are, food restrictions, and budget, and it generates meal plans and grocery lists for you. It even helps you track which foods you have at home, and what you’re low on, so you don’t accidentally over-buy something or find yourself without something that you need.

My Net Diary

My Net Diary monitors the basic data points you need to monitor if you’re on a weight loss journey. It calculates your calorie deficit each day between the calories consumed and burned, and lets you know how much weight that will help you lose. It provides nutritional information on your logged foods and even gives your foods a letter grade. Plus, it can track medications for you.
