Back-to-school season is here and while your former high school senior has likely learned all that they will need to excel in college academically, there are certain life skills required to succeed in college and in life. College living will certainly look a bit different first semester due to covid-19, but these basics are important, pandemic or not. Make sure you’ve had a conversation with your child about these things before they step foot on campus.
How to schedule a doctor’s appointment
Part of being a responsible adult is knowing how to schedule and keep up with appointments. A child who is in their mid to late teens is in the perfect position to begin learning how to do so. Sit with them while they schedule an annual physical or dental cleaning. Then have them write their appointment dates down in a digital or physical calendar.

How to prepare basic meals
By the time they’re 12 or 13 years of age, children should begin learning their way around the kitchen. And by the time that they reach 15 or 16, they should know how to prepare at least a few meals from start to finish. You can initiate this process by inviting your child into the kitchen as you cook, having them help you with a part of the dinner prep process — like chopping the onions or shredding the cheese, and narrating your actons as you prepare a meal.

How to wash clothes
You can begin to teach your child laundry basics by the time they’re 10 or even earlier in some cases. A great place to start is by having them assist you with sorting the clothes by color. Once they have mastered this step, you can move on to other key steps, such as allowing them to add detergent, and select washer and dryer settings.

How to maintain a bank account
Maintaining active checking and savings accounts is essential to adulting. Failure to keep an account that is in good standing can present challenges when it comes to receiving a paycheck from an employer, paying bills, and saving money in a secure place. Teens should understand the importance of knowing their account balances and not over-drafting their accounts.

How to manage a budget
Budgeting is essential to one’s financial health. Further, the earlier this skill can be learned, the better. When teens are away at school, they won’t necessarily have their parents standing over their shoulders to help manage their money on a day-to-day basis and bail them out of every little financial hiccup. A great way to teach kids about budgeting is to have them sit with you while you manage your own.

How to clean the kitchen
Cleaning the kitchen is an art — and it’s not just limited to dishwashing. Parents understand this concept. Kids, not so much. In addition to assigning chores, be sure to explicitly state and even model the steps for effective kitchen cleaning. Further, explain that kitchen maintenance can impact the health of the entire household.

How to clean a bathroom
Similar to cleaning the kitchen, bathroom maintenance is also essential. Of course, there is the obvious reason: no one wants to use a dirty, smelly bathroom. However, having a clean and sanitized restroom is also necessary for keeping household members safe. Though the steps may seem obvious, teens may need their parents to explicitly state and model directions.

How to fill out paperwork
To some teens, the idea of filling out paperwork can be intimidating and overwhelming. No one actually likes paperwork, but it’s a necessary part of adulting and they should definitely get some practice before leaving for college. You can give them practice by printing forms online that reflect real-life scenarios such as medical intake forms and job applications.

How to advocate for themselves
Most of all, teens should be comfortable speaking up for themselves before they leave the nest and head to college. While this may not happen overnight, you can remove the training wheels and give them some practice while they are still home. If you happen to be dining out and the waiter gets their order wrong, encourage your teen to point out the error instead of doing it for them. If you’re at one of their doctor’s appointments, have them announce their arrival with the receptionist at the front desk. Some shyer children will protest at first, but they will get the hang of it.
