I was visiting my friend who has two kids right now (in an outdoor setting because coronavirus) and she was talking about how very much in love she still is with her husband since having kids, but that the relationship has gone through its ups and downs. I reminded her that, if parenthood doesn’t impact your relationship one bit, then you’re probably doing parenthood wrong. She laughed and agreed, and just said that, having to make all of those decisions, every day, about something you care about literally more than anything in the world (your kids) is bound to create arguments. Those are battles you don’t get to not choose with your partner. You feel so strongly and passionate about the wellbeing of your kids that, when your and your partner’s opinion differs on how to handle something, it’s hard not to get worked up. “The good thing is that we worked out the big stuff before even getting pregnant,” she said. Huh. I pried. She said things like, whether or not they’d be raised religious, whether they’d opt for public or private school at various times of their lives – things like that – were things they talked about before getting pregnant. It seems so genius but also so obvious. Right? But a lot of parents don’t do it. They agree they want kids, that’s about all they agree on, and they toss out the condoms. Here are things parents should talk about before even getting pregnant.

Where to raise the kids
You may both have quiet ideas about where you’d like to raise the kids, in the long run. Maybe you think the city where you live now is obviously where you’d raise the kids. You want them to be exposed to culture and diversity from a young age. But maybe your partner thinks you’ll obviously move to the suburbs once the kids are there. You’d be shocked how many couples think they’re on the same page about this, but aren’t.

How involved do you want the grandparents
In many ways, the grandparents may want to be involved. They may want to swoop in and pay for the child’s private middle school if you can’t afford it. They may want to be over, all day, every weekend once the grandkids are there. They may want to participate in disciplining the kids. It’s best to discuss boundaries before the kids arrive and everything is chaos.

Private school or public?
This is a decision you’ll need to make at several phases in your child’s life. Nowadays, there is a private and prestigious (or “prestigious”) option for just about every level of schooling. You should sit down and really discuss the pros and cons of sending your kid to a private elementary school or high school. It’s not cheap, so you should make sure it’s worth it if you go that route.

Which religion?
Maybe you both practice different religions, which was fine, until now, when you need to choose one for the kids. Or neither of you is very religious, but you were raised religious. Do you want to reintroduce that to your kids’ lives? Perhaps you have very religious parents who will pressure you to raise the kids that way. How do you feel about that?

How religious?
You may say, “Sure, we’re religious” but you haven’t attended a service or read scripture in…you can’t remember how long. Perhaps you want your children to be more religious than you’ve been. But that will naturally involve you getting more involved in your religion again, too. Is that something you’re up for?

Vegan/vegetarian/carnivore?
This may be a non-issue for some couples, but can be a big issue for many. Consider all of the diets out there today. Vegetarian, pescatarian, vegan, carnivore, gluten-free…It’s fine when you and your partner eat differently. You’re both adults who are free to make those decisions. But now you need to choose how to best nourish the bodies of your little ones, and you’ll have strong opinions on that.

Will you both continue to work?
Definitely have a clear answer on this before getting pregnant. By the second trimester of your pregnancy, you should let your work know if you’ll be leaving – just as a courtesy. And you and your partner should be prepared for the financial realities of what it means if one person stops working. Don’t calculate and decide all of this when you’re already showing.

If not, who is staying at home?
If you decide that one of you will stay home with the kids, which one of you will that be? The answer could be easy for some couples. Maybe one person only worked to stay busy and didn’t love his or her job, so that’s that. But if you’re both passionate about your careers and don’t want to take a break…you have some thinking to do.

If yes, what sort of childcare?
If you are both going to continue to work, then you need to discuss the matter of childcare. Will you hire a private nanny? Will you drop your kids off at daycare? What kind of daycare do you like? Do you want a small, private one in somebody’s home? Or one in a commercial space with lots of kids? There are so many pros and cons to weigh between all of these choices.

Is the current home suitable?
You may not see the problem with your current home. You’re having one child, you have one spare bedroom – there you have it. Everybody has a room! Your partner, however, may be on Zillow every night looking for a place with three extra rooms so the grandparents can visit more, and you can have another kid. Oh, and he wants a big yard for the kids to play in. Buying a new home or moving is a financial decision that should be discussed in advance of the pregnancy.

What home improvements need to be made?
Perhaps you decide that you can stay in your current home, but you’ll need to make adjustments. You’ll need to put up some sort of safety gate around the pool or front yard. You’ll need to transform the home office into a nursery. You want to be in agreeance on these renovations before you get pregnant, since you’ll have enough going on once the baby arrives. Those changes should be made during pregnancy.

Should you start a trust for them?
You may want to open a trust for your child. It could help fortify her financial future. It may seem like an obvious step to some, but others can feel it sets a child up to be spoiled, or to not work hard enough, knowing the trust is there. You could always not tell the child about the trust until she’s 18? But that’s still an age when teens may slack off, knowing the money is there. It’s something to think about.

What is our discipline style?
What sort of disciplinarians will you be? Will you be a house that has time outs? Strict limits on screen time? Will you give allowances? Will they be big or small? Will they be cut down if a child misbehaves? Do you even believe in punishing children? Or is it enough to talk to them and make sure they know what they did wrong?

Why do we want kids?
This is a huge one. Talk about it. A lot of people have kids for the wrong reasons. They are avoiding the fact that they don’t know what else they want to do with their lives. They’re running from a toxic family and want to build a new family but…they should probably work out their stuff with their original family, first. Then there are wonderful reasons to want kids. Just talk about it before doing it.

Are we ready, emotionally?
You as a couple must be ready. You can’t still have fundamental differences in beliefs and values. You can’t have massive communication issues. You can’t be fighting all of the time. Imagine how much you’ll fight once the baby arrives if you already fight all of the time. You need to feel rock solid – like you can handle some turbulence and survive it.
