4 of 5

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, just because salons are reopening in certain states doesn’t mean you necessarily need to be the first one back in your stylist’s chair when he or she reopens. That being said, I totally understand if you’ve been holding out for the past four months and are itching to bring back your blowout (at least for a few hours in this heat). The thing is, if you use the right products and tools, you can get that silky, blowing-in-the-wind look you crave without potentially exposing yourself to Covid-19. And to set you on your way, I’ve compiled a list of five of them.

I’m of the mindset that whatever shampoo and conditioner you use doesn’t have much impact on your blowout so long as your hair is clean and moisturized after washing. But it’s what you put on your hair after that step that makes all the difference. Here are five products I consider to be essential for getting that salon silk press at home.

Farewell Frizz Rosarco Milk Leave-in Conditioning Spray

Briogeo Farewell Frizz rosarco milk leave-in conditioning spray

In my humble opinion, one of the key differentiators between silk presses at the salon and blowouts at home is body. When your hair is weighed down by product it can’t move — no matter how much wind attempts to blow through it (or how much you sit in front of the fan in your living room). That’s why I’m a fan of leave-in conditioning sprays like this one which provides much-needed moisture and softness for healthy detangling but won’t weigh hair down. The combination of rosehip, argan, and coconut oils in this spray ensures strands are nourished but not greasy, which is exactly what you want.

Super Healthy Hair™ Coconut Water Heat Shield Styler | Beauty Pie US

Beauty Pie Super Healthy Hair Coconut Water Heat Sheild Styler

A heat protectant of some sort should be a non-negotiable when it comes to blow-drying and flat ironing hair. What I love about this shield spray is that it’s made with coconut water, the patented protein Keravis, and elasticity Peptides to strengthen hair as it protects it from heat. Plus, it has an invisible feel (you know how some products leave your hair feeling sticky and coated?) for “a natural, bouncy-body finish” just like I talked about on the last slide.

You obviously need a blowdryer for your blowout, but not all blowdryers are created equal. This pro-lite dryer from eva nyc is made for professionals and promises a salon-quality blowout in half the time, which I can vouch for. Negative ions and tourmaline-infused ceramic help lock in moisture and reduce frizz so that you don’t have to do multiple passes with your flat iron, potentially causing heat damage. And what’s dope about this particular version is that is was designed by Puerto Rican multi-media artist and storyteller D’ana of COVL.

BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Mini Straightening Iron

When celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen used this flat iron on my hair during my last blowout I told her I needed this tool in my life. She warned against it, not because the BaBylissPRO isn’t as bomb as I thought it was but because she told me I might get addicted to the straightening iron.

Try as you might with your regular flat iron, nothing will catch your edges or your kitchen like this mini iron from BaByliss, and getting those roots silky straight is a key differentiator between salon silk presses and most at-home blowouts.

RESTORE & REVIVE AVOCADO OIL

Keeping with the focus on lightweight products, this Avocado Oil will be your best friend while maintaining your silk press. Because this product is a spray, you reap the rich smoothing and moisturizing benefits of avocado oil without the heaviness. This is especially ideal when it comes to keeping the scalp hydrated without making your strands suffer from a traditional oil or moisturizer as the product travels down the hair follicle.
