Ten weeks came and went so quickly. And last night, Issa Rae and the good people of “Insecure” concluded the fourth season in a way that had more than a few of us shook…and not in a good way. There were some revelations, some reconciliations, and some possible reconnections.
The episode starts off warm and fuzzy. Lawrence learns he got the job in San Francisco and much to his pleasant surprise, Issa is willing to be in a long distance relationship with him. Molly and Andrew seem to be gelling at her work event. Nathan sweetly apologizes for insulting Issa’s relationship with Lawrence.
But then all hell breaks loose, when Kelli tells Molly that she and Derek can’t find Tiffany. The crew go on a search for her and some things are unearthed during and most certainly afterward.

Why can’t all police behave like the one did last night?
In their search for Tiffany, Issa, Molly, Kelli, and Derek get on the city bus. While there, Kelli meets a weird White, gay man who unnecessarily tells Kelli that his inner Black woman looks a lot like her. In this moment, when they’re trying to find their friend, Kelli is not here for it. And she tells the man so.
Later, they realize Tiffany’s checked into the Sheraton just as the bus is passing the hotel. Kelli argues with the bus driver to stop, until she finally pushes his door open button and the group hops off. The same White man who was all up in Kelli’s face, calls the police on the group, instead of simply minding his business.
Thankfully, when the cops show up, they’re not trying to cause any drama. After all of incidents we’ve witnessed, in the past week alone of police going out of their way to be violent, it was a refreshing sight.

C’mon Derek!
Tiffany has a habit of making her life appear more perfect than it really is, including her relationship to Derek. But this past season, we’ve really seen him show up for her. He’s been a present and active father while she deals with postpartum depression and adjusting to being a new mother. And last night, when he finally finds her, after she’s been gone for a day and some change, he doesn’t question her, doesn’t accuse her and instead simply offers comfort.

Did you see Andrew leaving like that?
It’s been clear that Andrew has been swallowing a lot of his feelings regarding Molly. And I didn’t think these two were going to last. Still, I was a little surprised that staying after for a work event was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Then again, that’s what typically happens when you have unresolved issue. It’s generally something tiny that sends you over. While the work thing in isolation may not have been that big of a deal, Andrew has been making concessions for Molly from the jump. And he didn’t feel that she was willing to do the same for him–and if he’s been paying attention her friends either. I really wish the show had explored Still, in Molly’s defense, she had no idea how dissatisfied Andrew was because he never spoke up in the moment.

Does Molly want Andrew or does she want a relationship?
I found it very telling that when Molly was fighting for her relationship with Andrew that the only argument she had was that they had been with one another longer than they had been with anyone else. That’s no where near good enough of a reason to make a relationship work. I think both Andrew and Molly helped one another grow in numerous ways. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the two need to be together, especially if one of them consistently finds himself unhappy.

Is Condola trying to trap Lawrence?
“Insecure” fans went from liking Condola as a friend for Issa to viewing her as the enemy of happiness. I saw people calling her manipulative and claiming she’s trying to trap Lawrence all because they both participated in an activity known to produce children. A lot of women too, which makes me wonder if y’all be serious when you say a woman should have autonomy over her own body.
I will admit that it’s strange that Condola wants to have a child with a man she didn’t even want to invite to Friendsgiving, especially after she had a whole husband. But when a woman wants a child, the circumstances don’t always matter enough for her not to keep it.
If anything, Lawrence should have been more careful. He knew that Condola wasn’t taking him that seriously. He knew that he still had feelings for Issa, and he knew that his job was going to take him away from the city. If anything, he trapped himself.

If you were Issa, are you trying to be with Lawrence?
Just when Issa says that she’s willing to date Lawrence long distance, he goes and hits her with another whammy. It’s all too much. Truly. It’s one thing to date a man who already has children and is somewhat settled in his role as a father. It’s an entirely different story to be with a man who is expecting a child. He should be there for doctor’s appointments, the birth, diaper changes, late night and early morning feedings, etc. So that means that right when these two are attempting to rebuild their relationship, Lawrence’s attention is going to be elsewhere, as it should.
I can’t say what I would do in this situation, but I’d be leaning closer to nah. I would love to know if Condola still wants to be with Lawrence. If so, that could make this whole thing much more difficult. If she doesn’t, it might be a peaceful transition. Still, Issa has proven that she’s good without Lawrence. So I’m sure she could do it again.

How is Nathan looking to y’all right now?
Plus there’s Nathan. Nathan is not without his own baggage. I’m sure he’s still figuring out how to best handle his bipolar disorder diagnosis. Still, knowing what we do about Nathan, him dealing with his mental health issues is still easier than Lawrence dealing with a whole newborn, Condola, Issa and himself at the same damn time. Ooo wee. Maybe ghosting ain’t so bad after all.

Do Molly and Issa only work when there’s drama?
There were more than a few people who argued that Molly and Issa only turned back to one another because they were going through something. That may have been true. But y’all know how life goes. Sometimes it takes your world being rocked before you recognize the people who will help you re-stabilize. Molly and Issa have a lot of work to do on their relationship. They have to develop an entirely different way of communicating with one another.

What happened to Latoya?
I thought for sure that we were going to at least find out what happened to Latoya. Is she dead, alive? What’s up? I know show writer and director for last night’s finale, Prentice Penny, said that they wanted Latoya’s story to be resolved in the character’s search for Tiffany. I get that. And it’s always nice to see a Black girl found. Still, we want answers about Ms. Latoya. We’re invested at this point.
