If you tuned into Insecure episode three on Sunday, there were quite a few memorable moments to pay attention to. There was Lawrence and Issa leaving fans to ponder if we want to see them back together. There was Issa and Molly’s issues playing out in the middle of the grocery store. And there was Issa’s brother, Ahmal, dropping some therapy gems on Issa, providing her with the encouragement and support she hadn’t been getting.
In the midst of all that though, was Masika Kalysha. Seriously though, the former Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood star appeared in the “Lowkey Thankful” episode, and we didn’t even realize it. Others did, though.

Blink and you might have missed the feisty reality TV personality playing the date of Molly’s brother Curtis, showing up at the Carter house in lucite stripper heels for Thanksgiving dinner. Nevertheless, it was a speaking role, and she did great. While you may not have noticed on first watch, she actually gave fans a heads up to tune in to see her on Sunday.

That particular episode was filled with a few celeb guest appearances, from Masika to Wendy Raquel Robinson, who played Issa’s mom, and Robin Thede, portraying a drunk friend of Condola’s, all showing up. As for Masika, this isn’t a first acting job for her. She was in Three Can Play That Game in 2007, a movie called The Love Section with Mekhi Phifer, and is in an upcoming TV series called Pump with Ray J, Jennifer Freeman and Michael Jai White.

However, she’s most known for her reality TV work, appearing on the West coast Love and Hip Hop franchise on and off for four seasons. She also appeared in one season of WEtv’s Growing Up Hip Hop: Atlanta in 2018. She hasn’t appeared on reality TV since.
The star told Life & Style a couple of years ago that she left LHHH despite blowing up on the series because she wanted to show people there was a lot more to her than how she appeared on the show.
“I think Love & Hip Hop was an amazing experience, a great stepping stone, but what we have to realize on these shows [is] they are very entertaining, but they’re not careers — they’re career moves,” she said. “So you get on these shows, you have a great platform but you only have a certain amount of time to accomplish something, and I wasn’t accomplishing it. I wasn’t able to showcase my music, I wasn’t able to promote my businesses or what I really do or who I really am. I tried, but pretty much I was made into this character that I’m not.”
Now she’s getting to showcase herself as a scene-stealing comedic actress. Boss move, indeed.

The star was applauded by a fan, who also applauded Insecure for showcasing non-traditional actors and actresses on the series. “Shoutout to Insecure for getting all these reality stars a check during off season,” the commenter said. “I’m not mad at it!”
Another commenter congratulated Masika, saying, “Let’s pray for more doors to open….💪🏾❤️😍….AWESOME!!!”

A fan of the show put the word out for others on Twitter that Masika had a special role on the latest episode. “Did anybody else notice Masika on Insecure? She was Molly’s brothers gf in the black dress on the couch…”. Another fan of the star said said it was hard to miss the TV personality in the role.
“Lmaaao I legit just got to this scene n was like ‘is that Masika???'” she said.
A number of people noted that it was great that Issa Rae would use Insecure to create opportunities for stars we tend to really only get to see on reality television. In episode 1, Porsha Williams, Kandi Burruss and Ray J appeared. And as previously mentioned, a number of familiar faces from TV and film have been appearing, including Wendy Raquel Robinson, Terri J. Vaughn, and Paula Jai Parker.

A common comment people had about Masika’s appearance on the “Lowkey Thankful” episode was that they knew she made an appearance because her voice is very unique. “Wait I knew that was Masika’s deep voice on Insecure” said one viewer, while another said, “I thought I saw you!! that voice is undeniable! get it Sika!”
But for all the people who knew who they were seeing based on her signature deep voice, others said they could not tell they were looking at Masika. Blame it on the wig, maybe?
“They got masika on Insecure?? I didn’t even recognize her !” said one woman. “Omg I didn’t even recognize you! Congrats” wrote another.

Plenty of people were happy to see her getting the opportunity to do scripted television. It was a sign that she was doing just fine after moving on from reality TV.
“Definition of booked and busy. Love it,” said one follower. “Masika makin an appearance on Insecure is actually a gem. I always like her,” said another commenter on Twitter.
People also applauded Masika’s sense of humor. On LHHH, she was accused of having dirty feet by a former friend, and coincidentally, her feet, in those lucite heels, were zoomed in on during the Insecure episode. “That was cute with the feet zoom, I love good sports” said one commenter on Twitter.
Some people still had a hard time picking her out from the episode. “Wait where did y’all see Masika in this last episode of Insecure asked a young woman on Twitter. Another noted they didn’t realize they were looking at Masika until they watched the episode again. “I just peeped that was you after watching for a 2nd time!! Congrats”
In the end, people all over social media were happy for the TV personality and burgeoning actress — once they realized she was a part of the episode.
“IS THAT MASIKA???? Okay sis!” said a Twitter user. “Get ya coin.”
“Yasss! I had to do a double take,” said another on Instagram. “Congratulations”
