quarantine activities for adults

What did your vision board look like before quarantine? Here’s a little peek at mine: it involved doing a public reading from my published (wildly-successful) novel at bookstores across the country, elaborate and ultra-healthy recipes (leaning towards Keto), and some combination of a bathing suit and a pool or beach and pina colada. There were also a few beautiful bedroom and living room decor ideas. I’m sure we all get a good L-O-freaking-L out of that now.

We are all adapting and changing. We are lowering our expectations for each day. Maybe I don’t want to say “lowering,” as that sounds negative but…adjusting. I don’t want to say we were spoiled before because we can and should expect to be able to do things like travel and pursue our dreams and create beautiful dishes from farmers market-picked ingredients. And damnit our leaders better find out a way we get back to that soon because I think we are all grasping onto the threads of our sanity at this point. We weren’t spoiled, but now, perhaps we are just more appreciative, in the face of having much less. Here’s what a quarantine vision board might look like.

Hugs

There would be lots and lots of hugs on my Coronavirus vision board. And hand shakes. And sitting side by side with someone. And holding a friend’s hand. I miss human contact so much and it feels like a dream at this point.

Toilet paper

One corner of my vision board would easily be dedicated to toilet paper. Lots and lots of toilet paper. And not just whatever thin, bad stuff is left at the wiped-out stores but the thickest, softest, three-ply stuff. Maybe there would be a golden bidet on there too.

Fresh produce

Oh my goodness do I want to go to the Farmer’s Market! That would be on the vision board for sure. And tons of fresh fruits and vegetables—piles of it. I am ready to not see another can of stewed peaches or string beans again for a long time.

Grocery shopping without a mask

To just see people grocery shopping without a mask on would be incredible. My pandemic vision board has people happily grocery shopping with their faces exposed and even standing less than six feet apart; sharing recipe ideas and chatting about the weather. Remember when the grocery store was social and fun rather than scary?

Commuting to work

I used to curse driving anywhere. I just didn’t like it. When I used to go into an office job I couldn’t stand my morning commute because it took me to the office. Now I’d love a morning commute because it would mean offices were open again.

Traffic

Ah traffic. Glorious traffic. Living in a city that has some of the worst of it, it used to be a major topic of conversation—how terrible it was and how much of our time it wasted. Now traffic would be a glorious sight because it would mean the world was back in action.

Waiting for a machine at the gym

Waiting in line at the gym to use a machine would be amazing because it would mean that the gyms were open again! Even having an employee tell me my time was up on a machine because others needed it would be glorious because that means there are others.

Visiting older loved ones

I used to see visiting my grandpa as a chore. I hate to say it but it’s true: it’s something I did before I got back to doing fun stuff. But now I’d love to visit him. This pandemic has forced me to stay away from him and made me remember that I won’t have him forever.

Traveling to a local park

I don’t even need to travel to Palm Springs or Las Vegas. Forget Paris of New York! If I could just travel to a local park or beach or hiking trail or museum. Those are the “destinations” on my vision board now.

Waking up to an alarm clock

I used to dread the alarm clock. But now on a vision board it would have little hearts and stars around it because an alarm clock means having something to do and somewhere to be. It means society is moving on a schedule again.

A real outfit

Nothing fancy. My old vision board had high fashion and expensive couture on it. This one would have maybe jeans. A cardigan. Some cute flats. A bra. Really a reason to get fully dressed would be amazing.

Going to the hairdresser

I had some hairstyles on my vision board before. Some very chic, sharp a-like bobs. Maybe some colorful balayage. Now if I could just have a hair dresser clean up these sad, broken split ends and do my roots some justice and properly trim my bangs. Aaaah. That’s on my vision board.

Having a drink at a bar

Just any drink. Not some fancy, craft, mixology, flaming, top shelf with a passion fruit sphere thing like I used to dream about. Just clinking beers with another human being at a bar that was open with other humans would feel so luxurious. That’s vision board material.

Ordering food from a server

That’s it. That’s as simple as my restaurant fantasy gets now. It has nothing to do with a rooftop boujie place anymore. I don’t need a restaurant with black napkins. If I could have a rude server take my order, incorrectly, in a busy loud casual diner, I’d be thrilled. It would mean restaurants were open again!

Politics on the news

I never thought I’d fantasize about seeing politics on the news again—about watching anchors and politicians bicker and lie and brag. But I miss it. I would love to see it because if I saw that it would mean the Coronavirus was gone. Right now, that’s the only thing discussed on the news.
