I know we are all getting antsy at this point. Some of us have been quarantined for a month. Some have only been indoors for a couple of weeks, but even that can be hard if you’re used to living a busy and social life. Though we should listen to what the experts say, some of us have started to play doctor and decide that we know when it’s safe to go outdoors. When we really want something, we can come up with some pretty shifty logic. The human mind will play tricks on you when it’s determined. And so I see people sneaking out of their homes, defying the stay at home order.

Everyone has their reasons or should I say “reasons.” The thing is that the best reason in the world won’t kill the Coronavirus if you catch it during one of your stealth outings. And the most convincing logic won’t make someone healthy if you unknowingly give them the virus while you’re breaking the stay at home protocol. Here are dumb reasons to leave the house, squashed.

I’m so lonely

I understand. We are all lonely. But if you get sick and have to stay inside for a full month—truly unable to even be in the same room as your family or friends—then you’ll experience a whole new level of loneliness. Or if you wind up in a hospital bed for weeks you will be unbearably lonely. So call a friend. And stay inside.

I want fresh air

The air in your home can begin to feel stale. You just want some fresh air. So you want to walk through an empty mall or get too close to neighbors on a dog walk. But the air inside your home will seem pretty fresh if you wind up in the hospital, where the air is truly stale.

My friend already had it

You’re going to see a friend, believing you’re both safe because your friend already had it weeks ago. So you believe she’s no longer contagious, and if you’re a carrier, you can’t get her sick. But there are now multiple strains of the virus so you could still get your friend sick, or she could be the carrier of a new strain and get you sick.

I need to visit my sick loved one

Your loved one is sick. It’s your boyfriend with whom you don’t live, and he has it. Or it’s your mom. Or it’s your best friend. Not visiting a loved one when they’re ill feels so insensitive. But you cannot help make them get better any faster by putting yourself at risk. And you will put yourself at risk. And you could carry the virus to another healthy loved one.

I forgot one thing at the store

You forgot whipped cream for the pancake breakfast you had planned. You forgot chili flakes for your pizza. Well, too bad. Having the perfect bite of pizza or whipped cream on your pancakes is not worth the risk of COVID-19. Picking up whipped cream would not be considered an essential errand.

I like to pick out my own products

So you can afford grocery delivery and should get it because you’re at risk due to your age or preexisting conditions, or live with someone who is. But you’d rather get your groceries yourself because the Instacart person doesn’t pick out the exact avocados you like. Well, maybe it’s worth having imperfect avocados to protect your health.

There is a cute dog

You see your neighbor’s dogs running around in the culs-de-sac or next driveway over. And dogs make you so happy. Dogs don’t have Coronavirus, so you just think “Can’t I go pet the dogs?” But if you’re a carrier and send those dogs home to get their owner sick, then those cute dogs won’t have a healthy owner to take good care of them.

I need to wash my car

People are making up errands to run right now. Like washing their car. A lot of the gas station car washes are still open right now, giving people an excuse to get out and run that “errand.” But when you use those, you touch buttons and window wipers that others touched. And who needs a clean car during the Coronavirus?

I can’t stand my housemates

You can’t stand your housemates. It’s you and them all of the time. You just want to go for a walk and be away from them—maybe you can chat with neighbors. But if you wind up in the hospital, you’ll desperately miss your housemates. You’ll prefer their company in your living room than that of nurses in the ICU.

I found something on Craigslist

With little to do, some of us are taking to online shopping. Perhaps finally finding that perfect end table for the couches or decorative mirror for the bedroom. You find one on Craigslist for a great price that’s just a 10-minute drive away! But I bet you’d rather be healthy, and short an end table, than get Coronavirus while getting a piece of furniture.

My elderly neighbor is lonely

You know that one of your elderly neighbors has nobody to visit her. You want to keep her company. That is certainly admirable, but by simply going in her home you could carry the virus to her and make her sick. If you’d like to cheer her up, say hello outside her window, and drop off groceries and other necessities for her.

My dog likes it here

This park. This beach. This trail. You’ve gone to a public recreational area that is closed due to COVID-19. You snuck in. Your dog was getting tired of just walking around your block. You know what your dog really wouldn’t like? If you wound up in the hospital for a month or bedridden and were unable to walk her at all.

My kids needed an outing

Your kids are getting rambunctious and you really want to help them get their energy out. So you want to take them to a local playground. Nobody is there, you say. Well, others may have had the same idea as you. And they may have been there, touching the same swing set, a half hour ago. And they may have been carriers.

Nobody else is here

You think that it’s safe for you to go to the beach or a hiking trail, because nobody is there. You can’t get sick if you’re the only one there, right? Maybe. But you’re the only one there because others are doing their part and staying home. It’s not really fair that you benefit from their suffering.

It’s just been so long

I know it has. But it also…hasn’t. It’s really only been a few weeks. There have been and are war-torn countries in which people barely leave their houses for months. Or YEARS. If they could get through that, then you can get through this.
