Even though it’s been a long wait, the season 4 premiere couldn’t have come at a better time. With the majority of us in the house, day after day, we’re looking for something to keep our minds off the doom and gloom that’s happening around us. And what better way to escape than to enjoy the messiness in the lives of our favorite fictional characters.
Last night’s episode was a strong start to the season and there’s plenty to discuss. Check out the highlights, questions and concerns we have on the following pages.
“I don’t f*ck with Molly anymore”
This was the first line of the entire season. Whew! In the promotion of this new season, Issa shared that this time around, the group was going to be re-evaluating and examining friendships to determine whether they were meant to last for a lifetime or a season. But given Issa and Molly’s history, I thought Kelly or Tiffany would have been the first on the chopping block. But the fact that Issa and Molly have been so close explains the reason their relationship needs to be examined the most. And after last night’s episode, I can see why these two are going to have problems in the future.
The Sex
Sometimes I wonder if the HBO requires a certain amount of sex scenes per episode. Because there are times then it all feels a little…gratuitous. I was here for Issa and TSA Bae. But when it came to Condola and Lawrence, in Issa’s imagination and in real life, once the two reconciled, it felt a little forced. My husband felt the same way. But my sister did not. So let us know what y’all thought. Was the sex a little too much or just enough.

Welcome to a full size n*gga
While Issa doesn’t have a “man” perse, it doesn’t mean she’s going without in terms of sex. In fact, she has a new TSA Bae. And luckily, he’s open to instruction, willing to try positions that work for her and when he finally gets it right, he’s hitting the right spots.
But even beyond his sex game, he was willing to support her during the mixer. He worked security for free and even hyped people up before they came into the space. He might not be around long term but I’m here for him.
On the other hand, there were people who argued that they would like to see the show do a better job of handling sex and sexuality with its fat/plus size characters. Kelli’s sex life is often used for comic relief but I can’t recall ever seeing her in a sexual position. And after Issa and TSA Bae finish having sex, she talks about the fact that he sweats too much. She was willing to accommodate for that with a fan. Personally, I’m on the fence about whether the comedy is being insensitive to this demographic. But I’ll keep my eyes peeled from now on.

Is it a good idea for Condola and Issa to work together?
For as long as Issa has been working to find her footing in her professional life, it would be a shame for her to walk away from all the progress Condola has helped her make simply because she’s dating Lawrence. Yes, there relationship was significant. But it also was a while ago at this point. There have been plenty of people since then. And I know I wasn’t the only one who noticed how Condola, whose only known Issa for a short amount of time, has proven more supportive and encouraging than Molly, whose known her for years.
Without Issa (shit and Tasha) Lawrence wouldn’t be ready for her.
As much as Lawrence Hive works my very last nerve, I’m happy to see how he’s grown and evolved over time. None of that would have been possible without Issa—and a nod to Tasha for calling him a f*ck n*gga at the time when he needed it most. He finally seems to be at a place where he’s not dating out of boredom but for good reason. His house is clean, he’s being honest with Condola and he’s putting forth effort. I can appreciate it.

After all the shit Molly put Andrew through of course he’s seeing other people.
I really want Molly to grow up…like, yesterday. She toyed with that man for far too long for him to be putting all of his eggs in one basket with her. For all he knows, there might be a hole in the bottom of it.
As a woman in her thirties, Molly should be well aware that until you’ve explicitly had the conversation, assume your new boo is seeing and possibly sleeping with other people. It’s nothing to trip about. But Molly has a tendency of over-trippin.
It’s good she sent that text
There was one moment of growth for Molly. In the past, she would have allowed Andrew to walk away and her pride would have prevented her from saying anything in response. Thankfully though, this time around she showed some growth in expressing how she really felt to Andrew. That way, they’re both on the same page and can determine how they want to move forward…or not.
Ima need Molly to stop being so self-absorbed.
Molly has always been a shady friend. But her behavior last night was truly disheartening. On one of the biggest days of Issa’s life, Molly came in with a stank attitude obsessed about some relationship drama. And then at the end of the night, when Issa succeeded in procuring the funding she needed, Molly only had lukewarm feedback for her. As I mentioned before, Condola and TSA Bae were more supportive. And after all they’ve been through together, that’s a damn shame. But there’s a good chance that Molly might not be able to handle Issa coming up, while her life is still stagnant.
Familiar faces
“Insecure” is known for their show within the show trope. Where are the characters are tuned in to some hit show regardless of their separate lives and households. First it was “Due North,” which gave us the iconic line “I hate slavery.” Then there was the 90’s sitcom Kev’yn. And this year, it’s “Looking for LaToya,” about a 26-year-old Black woman who went missing in Crenshaw. The show is hosted by the beloved Terri J. Vaughn, known as Lavita Alize Jenkins-Robinson from “The Steve Harvey Show.”
Ray J makes a cameo saying that while he didn’t kill LaToya, he killed the p*ssy. Porsha Williams, of RHOA fame, is LaToya’s roommate Tasha. Kandi Burruss Is in there too, although I didn’t catch her role—maybe LaToya’s mom.
Aside from the cameos from the show within the show, it was also really nice to see Paula Jai Parker too.
