Young woman at home

We need to find a ray of sunshine in these terrifying times. For me, that ray of sunshine is the thought of me finally stepping out of my house looking better than when I was locked in. Hair? Done! Skin? Clear! Body? Right! I’m taking this time to hibernate and emerge from this quarantine a new woman! With all this time at home, I can work on my beauty goals all throughout the day. Even while I’m working!

I got the chance to speak with hairstylist and black hair expert Mia Mo. Mia is a stylist with years of experience under her belt. She spent her twenties nurturing her hair care career as a side hustle. After long hours studying college courses and working call center jobs, Mia educated herself on healing and styling hair. Now she’s giving back through the My Hair Goals Program. The program was made to give each and every one of you the tools to reach your hair goals. Whether you need a healthy scalp, length, or better curl definition, Mia Mo has a plan for everything.

I asked Mia what would be the best natural hair regimens to try during this quarantine and she had some amazing ideas! Keep reading to find your new favorite natural hair regimen while you’re stuck at home.

The Twist/ Braid Out

“Twists and braid outs always give you two styles in one,” Mia said. “Rock the twists for a few days keeping them hydrated. Then take them down to reveal perfectly defines tresses.

If you are recently natural or not accustomed to styling on your own this hairdo is a perfect starting point. You can part your sections larger if you’re looking for more volume or make them small for long-lasting definition. Things to keep in mind with this style: hydrate from root to tip with a great water-based moisturizer and be sure to seal with an oil of your choice. My personal favorite is the HairGoals Oil from MHG.

It’s lightweight and easily absorbed by the hair. Make sure your sections for the braids and twists are even. If you have to re-disburse your hair further down it will alter the end result. That was a mistake I make too often during my first attempts with this style. Also, be sure to let the hair dry completely before you take it down.”

The Pompadour Puff

“Prior to becoming one of our favorite Hidden Figures, Janelle Monae made this classic updo her signature look, Mia continued. “The pinned up pompadour is quick and convenient. You can achieve this style on day three of your oil twist out or on blow-dried hair in under 5 minutes. It’s perfectly professional for those Zoom meeting check-ins with the office, or pair it with your favorite headwrap for some cute and comfy lounging around the house.

Things to keep in minge with this style: This look is best achieved on stretched tresses. Be sure to apply serum prior to smoothing the hair down so it can appear sleek and shiny. Open (not closed) hair-pins will help to secure your hair without adding pressure to the pinup this will help you achieve your desired level of volume in the front.”

The Lace Wig

“This is the perfect time to put your hair away and wigs make it easy to access your natural hair to moisturize and seal your hair regularly and efficiently,” Mia said. “Wigs have taken over they’re convenient, protective and some kinky, curly and wavy textures require little to no style. If you’ve never worn a wig before or struggle with making them appear natural. I’ve put together a free PDF entitled “5 Easy Steps to Fabulous Looking Curls.”

Things to keep in mind with this style: Your natural hair should still be your first priority under your wigs. Be sure to braid it down and always use a cap to protect your hair-line from friction putting on and removing the unit.”

The Extra High Bun

“Twisted, braided, or curls out. This is another great ‘go-to’ for and an under five-minute style. You can keep it classy and do a pinned bun with studs, but I love to lay those baby hairs and pair it with my favorite hoops for a sassy casual look,” said Mia.

“Things to keep in mind with this style: Be sure not to pull those edges too tight this style is worn best when the bun is a ‘mess.'”

Ponytail Poppin!

“Do you currently have any bundles at home waiting on your next sew-in appointment? Take one or two and wrap them around that natural pony, boo! A ponytail is quick, convenient and neat, just be sure to braid your natural underneath. Most people go ‘straight to gel’ with this style but I prefer to wet and moisturize with a curl cream prior to smoothing to create hydrated waves effortlessly.

Things to keep in mind with this style: Although we love a smooth look, try to avoid pulling your hair too tight or to the same location with this style. Also, a DIY ponytail should be taken down at the end of the day so there’s no need to excessively wrap or pin your pony.

I hope you all enjoy these quick quarantine styles be sure to share and shoot me some pictures of any [styles] you have success with and for additional tips, tricks, and assistance with maintaining your mane you’re welcome to sign up with the MHG Mailing List.”
