The Corona Text Meme Is Hilarious

The news cycle has been dominated by the Corona virus. And rightly so. With celebrities, NBA players catching the disease, and Broadway, the NBA, and Disneyland closing their doors to the public, losing millions of dollars in the process. It’s serious.

But if you’re a Black person, you know that Black people have a certain knack for taking very serious topics and making light of them. And this pandemic is no different.

With more companies allowing their employees to work from home, folks are spending quite a bit of time on the internet. And as a result, folks have crafted a little joke to help us laugh through some of the anxiety some of us are experiencing.

Like memes before it, the corona virus features texts from a problematic ex.

According to CNBC, Broadway in New York City, has “gone dark.” The ban on Broadway shows began today at 5 pm and will last through April 12. Although it is unclear when theaters will return to their usual operations.

In regards to Broadway’s “darkness,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League said, “Our top priority has been and will continue to be the health and well-being of Broadway theatergoers and the thousands of people who work in the theater industry every day, including actors, musicians, stagehands, ushers, and many other dedicated professionals.”

The Broadway closings are a result of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s mandate that gatherings of more than 500 people be cancelled. The entire state will adhere to this measure beginning Friday.

Cuomo tweeted that in addition to the 500 person ban, Cuomo said that facilities that can hold 500 people will have to reduce their capacity by 50%.

According to CNN, Disneyland and California Adventure are closed in response to the virus as well. A spokesperson for Disneyland Resort said, “While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month.”
