Discussion of the Day: Would You Use a Surrogate?
Madames, as sisters have been making strides in the workplace, going higher and higher in education and crafting amazing careers, sometimes family has been put on the back-burner.
The other day while listening to the radio, I heard that more and more black women are choosing to become mothers through surrogacy. One example was of a woman who focused on her career through most of her 20s and 30s, and now at a more mature age, was having issues conceiving a child. Surrogacy is an arrangement between a woman and a couple or individual to carry and deliver a baby. In many cases, the process is an expensive, time consuming, and emotional one. The advantage of gestational surrogacy to the parents is that the embryo is created from the woman’s egg and the man’s sperm, so it is biologically theirs.
Angela Bassett and her husband Courtney B. Vance had their twins in 2006 through a surrogate, as did Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick, whose twin girls were born in 2009.
Do you think you would use a surrogate to carry a baby for you? Do you think it’s wrong or just not something you would do?
