Motherhood can definitely be a beautiful experience, but’s it’s also challenging.
One of the biggest hurdles for new moms is dealing with the strain placed on their mental and physical health. While some mothers have a handle on things as they go through the expected stress that accompanies adjusting to caring for a new life—sans sleep and too often while working—while their bodies are healing, others have a harder time coping. According to a study released by Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, 44 percent of African American women experience depressive symptoms after childbirth, and many say nothing about how they’re feeling. That’s why it’s important to talk about postpartum depression and recognize the signs.
