The romance surrounding a proposal can turn sour really fast if both people in the relationship aren’t on the same accord when it comes to next steps. As sweet as a well planned, public engagement can be, it requires really knowing your partner and where you and your significant other are in your connection.
When it comes to marriage, being surprised probably isn’t a good idea.
One man learned this the hard way when his public proposal to his girlfriend went awry. The unnamed couple was surrounded by video cameras and bystanders when the beau got down on one knee.
His partner seemed visibly upset and embarrased by the entire ordeal. You can watch below:
It’s clear that this couple was missing some critical communication details when it comes to their relationship. This is why pre-proposal conversations are important.
“A great balance is when couples can talk candidly about their future together while diligently focusing on the best they can be in the present.” family behavior specialist Dr. Jennifer Freed said.
Not only will you learn if you and your partner are ready for marriage with this discussion, but you will also learn crucial perspectives when it comes to lifestyle, how to raise kids etc.
“Most couples go into marriage without consciously addressing issues about blending families, raising children or not, religious or spiritual values, money, chore distribution, health habits, and other fundamental components of a healthy union,” Freed said. “Sharing deeply and authentically about each person’s longings and values can bring a couple closer, and help clarify the positive intentions in combining their lives legally.”
