Teyonah Parris just keeps the natural hair style slayage coming.

This time around, the newly cemented Marvel star, gave us another enviable glam look as she hit the Comic-Con Festival in San Diego, California. Parris was all smiles as she strolled on stage for a panel during the day, and rocked a sultry look to evening events with her hair coiffed into a loose curly textured bob.

“This was pretty much letting the world know that [Teyonah] was going to be a Black superhero for Marvel,” Parris’ hairstylist Richard Norman Grant told Madame Noire. “So, it was a huge moment.” It was a moment so big that her glam squad didn’t know the news until right before she left the room for a Comic-Con panel, where Marvel exec Kevin Feige revealed that Teyonah Parris would be starring as Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel in the new series WandaVision.

“They kept it very secret, and she told us right before she went downstairs to the panel,” Grant continued. “That was super overwhelming. And I was like, this is huge. It was very cool.”

Although Norman styled Parris’ day for Comic-Con, it was the perfect look for the announcement too. “Her character has similar hair,” he continued. “It’s pretty much like an afrocentric natural style. So, it coordinated with her actual character and adventures.”

The Los Angeles-based celebrity hairstylist, who has worked with the likes of Eve, Kim Fields, and Tamala Jones, gave us the lowdown on how he styled Parris’s hair and the products he used to slay it.

Wash and Condition Your Hair

Teyonah Parris was rocking twists right before Comic Con, but she and Grant decided to collaborate on a new look specifically for the comic book festival. The actress arrived to the makeup and hair room with her hair washed, conditioned, and slightly blown out for styling. If your hair is in the 4b-4c range like Parris, try As I Am’s Coconut Cowash ($9.00, asiamnaturally.com) and a creamy conditioner like Shea Moisture’s Curl and Shine Conditioner ($11.49, ulta.com) for washing and conditioning.

Detangle and Blow Out

After washing and conditioning your hair, go through your usual detangling process and do a blow out, using a hair protectant. Try Kinky Curly’s Knot Today Leave-In Detangler ($11.89, target.com) to detangle your hair and Taliah Waajid Shea-Coco Condition Daily Leave-in Conditioner ($11.50, walmart.com) for an ultra-moisturizing leave-in conditioner.

Before you blow out your hair, spray on Shea Moisture’s Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Moisture Thermal Protect Set & Hold Spritz ($11.99, sheamoisture.com) to add an extra level of protection.

Prep the Hair

Parris’s style looked like a twist out but it was actually a wand out. So, it needed some extra prep prior to wanding it. “Prepping wise, it was just using Fresh Start from Stylus, as well as the brand’s mousse and some shine,” Grant said. He applied all three to Parris’s hair before styling: FHI Heat Fresh Start Protective Prep and Primer ($12.00, fhiheat.com),  FHI Volumizing Mousse ($16.00, fhiheat.com), and FHI Shine Express Hair Mist ($16.00, fhiheat.com).

Use a Half Inch Barrel to Style the Hair

Once you have it blown out, it’s time to start the curling process. “The next step from there was just using a half inch barrel, which is like the smallest barrel, to create a natural look,” Grant said. This was the most time consuming part of achieving the style, because Grant separated the hair into “12 or 13 rows” and curled each one to get the naturally curly look they wanted to achieve. Before you start barreling your hair, make sure to part it on the desired side (similar to Teyonah’s look) and then start working magic with your barrel.

Separate and Shape

After Grant curled the hair, he separated the curls and “defined it, making it into a beautiful shape.” For a finishing spray to help keep the hair in place, try DevaCurl’s Flexible Hold Hairspray ($25.00, devacurl.com).

The Alternative

You can also achieve a similar look with a heat-free style like a twist out. To do so, part your hair and then twist it into two-strand twists with your favorite products. We love TGIN’s Twist and Define Cream  ($11.99, sallybeauty.com) and Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter ($15.99, sallybeauty.com) for just that. Allow it to air dry, and separate the curls per Grant’s process above.
