Everything is good when it's a good hair day

Natural hair can be a full-time job, but laying down those edges—sis, that’s overtime. It can be a real struggle finding the right edge tamer to keep your baby hair in place for an hour, let alone all day. If I take the time to actually lay my edges—which is rare, to be honest—I want to be sure my style remains sleek. A good edge control should have a strong, flexible hold without a greasy or slimy finish. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading to find five edge controls to help you slay all day.

MIELLE ORGANICS HONEY & GINGER FLEXIBLE HOLD EDGE GEL

A recent favorite of mine is the Mielle Organics Honey & Ginger Flexible Hold Edge Gel ($11.19, target.com). I love this product because unlike a lot of edge tamers, this one is buildable. I can gradually add more product without it flaking, or creating an unsightly, goopy mess on my hairline. Natural ingredients like honey and aloe also make this a gentle, moisturizing formula, so I don’t have to worry about being too harsh on my most delicate hairs. As a final bonus, the ginger root stimulates blood circulation which leads to hair growth, a definite pro for those looking to add fullness to their edges.

CURLS BLUEBERRY BLISS CURL CONTROL PASTE

Next up is the Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Paste ($8.39, target.com). This multipurpose edge tamer can be used to sleek down your hairline or to add extra control, shine, and definition to your overall style. I like to warm this product up in my hand and rub it over the top of my hair as a finisher for buns and ponytails. Not only does it smell amazing, but it works.

TGIN SMOOTH & HOLD EDGE CONTROL

Nettle leaf and castor oil make the TGIN Smooth & Hold Edge Control ($10.39, sallybeauty.com) a great choice for a moisturizing hold. This gel is completely free of sulfates, parabens, petrolatum and other yucky ingredients that cause adverse effects like drying or product buildup. The formula on the TGIN edge tamer is nice and lightweight, which makes it perfect for daily touchups.

CREME OF NATURE PERFECT EDGES BLACK

The Creme of Nature Perfect Edges in black ($3.99, target.com) is definitely one of my favorites. While most edge controls are clear in color, this one comes in black and dark brown, which is great for brunettes. If you are experiencing any thinning or sparseness near your hairline, the dark color of this edge control helps to fill in the area and create the illusion of increased fullness. Of course, this product should be worked into the edges well to create a seamless blend, and is not a good choice for those with colored roots.

THE MANE CHOICE HAIR TYPE 4 LEAF CLOVER STUBBORN EDGES FREEZING GEL

Finally, we have The Mane Choice Hair Type 4 Leaf Clover Stubborn Edges Freezing Gel ($10.99, themanechoice.com). Made specifically for those with super coily, kinky hair, this gel is super heavy-duty. An alcohol-free formula means no drying your hair out, which is especially important for those with type 4 hair. The maximum hold is unreal and will keep those baby hairs in formation all day.
