The twist out just might be the hallmark of natural hairstyles. At the very least, it’s a dependable, go-to style almost every natural has tried once or twice. Twist outs are great for a number of reasons. They’re an effective way to retain moisture in the hair and can double as two-styles in one, if you’re the type to rock your two-strand twists as a protective style before unraveling. I’m talking, desert-island choice, right here. Not only is the scent intoxicating, but this cream is the perfect balance of moisture and hold for my thick hair. The smallest amount goes a long way and as advertised, this butter delivers a moisture punch for especially dry hair. It’s one of the only products that works to define my ends, which tend to under-perform due to some residual hair color. I can’t say enough how much my hair drinks this stuff up.
MIELLE ORGANICS POMEGRANATE & HONEY TWISTING SOUFFLE
Truth be told, when it comes to moisture the entire Mielle Organics Pomegranate & Honey line is a must-have. It’s no wonder, then, that the Pomegranate & Honey Twisting Soufflé ($12.99, target.com) has given me some of the most hydrated, long-lasting twist out results. Honey is a natural humectant great for attracting and trapping moisture in the hair, and the consistency of this cream makes it perfect for thicker curls, coils, and kinks. As a bonus, I always get a ton of compliments whenever I use this product. The smell is amazing and lingers in the hair days after you unravel your twists or braids.
MELANIN HAIRCARE TWIST-ELONGATING STYLE CREAM
A recent addition to my collection is the Melanin Haircare Twist-Elongating Style Cream ($16.99, melaninhaircare.com). The flagship product from the brainchild brand of YouTube queen, Whitney — also known as, Naptural85 — this twisting cream lived up to its hype both in moisture and definition. Unlike the Mielle cream the Melanin product has a barely-there, clean and pleasant shea butter scent that’s great for those who might be sensitive to fragrance. I also love how Whitney blessed us with a whopping 16oz of product, a generous size for packaging for most natural hair brands.
CURLS BLUEBERRY BLISS TWIST-N-SHOUT CREAM
Curls has got to be one of my go-to brands for my natural haircare and my favorite line is their Blueberry Bliss collection. The Curls Blueberry Bliss Twist-N-Shout Cream ($12.99, walgreens.com) has a whipped consistency that is thick enough to hold my dense hair in place, but still airy and easy to work with. The product penetrates my strands very easily and the aloe juice gives my hair a natural, healthy shine.
CAMILLE ROSE NATURALS ALMOND JAI TWISTING BUTTER
Last but not least is the Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter ($14.79, target.com). I feel like I’m giving my hair a real treat whenever I pull this out. The almond milk base gives this cream a nuttier smell as opposed to most other products, which tend to carry a powerfully tropical scent. Instead, the Almond Jai butter will have you smelling like freshly baked pastries. This gem is packed with high-performing ingredients from honey for moisture, to green tea extract and aloe juice for soft, touchable hair.
