Despite Loyal Customers, Senegalese Fashion Center Struggles
(New York Times) — As he sat behind his humming Singer sewing machine, a cascade of traditional African dresses and dashikis on the walls around him, Abdou Diop’s face glowed as he recounted the history of his shop, the Senegalese Fashion Center. Embroidered, tie-dye, and colorfully printed fabrics are transformed into formfitting dresses for women or into loose garments for men. Most of the fabrics are imported from Senegal and other West African countries, with a few that come from Manhattan, Mr. Diop said.
