Reed Forces About-Face by Council on Legislative ‘Wish List’
(AJC) — If anyone had any questions about Atlanta’s strong mayor system, Kasim Reed answered it Monday night. Minutes after the Atlanta City Council voted 13-0 to approve the city’s proposed legislative package, a “wish list” to be submitted to the General Assembly in January, the mayor made a rare stop in the council chambers to blast the body for arbitrarily removing a bill to offer tax exemptions to police officers, firefighters and teachers who live in the city. The the city is scheduled to deliver the package to the Georgia General Assembly in January. The bill in question would seek a constitutional amendment that would exempt police officers, firefighters and teachers from paying city property taxes. Reed said that as of right now, 608 police officers and firefighters would or could benefit from the bill if it passes. No data are available on teachers yet, he said.
