Kerry Washington is quite the style star, not only in terms of what she wears, but also when it comes to what she does with her hair. The 42-year-old mother of three is often seen rocking sleek hairstyles, soft curls, and fun pinned-up ponytails. But she also loves a good afro.
Washington actually started her career with a curly TWA (who could forget it in Save the Last Dance?), and recently, she enjoyed New York Fashion Week with the help of a curly afro. She’s getting more and more comfortable in the look, as well as in other natural-inspired styles, whether at premieres or major red carpets, thanks to her kids.
“Wearing my natural hair on the red carpet has a lot to do with me being a mom now and wanting to reflect that for them,” she told Glamour in 2018. “Again, it’s that idea that there’s not just one way to be beautiful and that there are lots of ways to bring out your best self. You don’t have to follow one prescription of what beauty is. I try to always be free and authentic and not leave the house until I’m like, OK, I feel good about this.”
We’re sure that not every look is completely natural every time, but either way, we admire the fact that she likes to get so creative with her afro, reminding everyone that they’re more versatile than we like to think. To see the many ways in which she’s styled her afro, short, long, asymmetrical, big and blown out or tightly curled, hit the flip and get inspired.
