Cabrini-Green Tutors Do More Than Teach
(Chicago Tribune) — The smiling brown eyes on the informational flier are the first draw into a program where the terms “tutor,” “mentor” and “superhero” are interchangeable. Evenings of spelling words and playing Battleship are a close second. But perhaps the greatest lure — what keeps some 250 volunteers coming back week after week — is the kids themselves. For more than 40 years, the Cabrini-Green Tutoring Program has paired students in need with adult tutors who often rush in after a long day of work to pore over textbooks and work sheets, the likes of which they haven’t seen in decades.
