Employer Health Coverage Shrinking in NY
(Crain’s) — Fewer workers in New York are getting health coverage from their employers, according to a new study. The proportion of workers with employer-sponsored insurance has fallen dramatically over the past decade, to 58% in 2009 from 69% in 2001, and lags the national average of 65%, according to a study by the New York State Health Foundation. Significantly, the percentage of employers that offer coverage hasn’t changed, remaining steady at 70% over that period. But as businesses tightened eligibility, shifted more costs to workers and limited coverage choices, employees have not signed up for the coverage that is offered to them.
