Dating a grown man with a roommate can be awkward, but it is very common. If you live in a major city, then most residents simply cannot afford to live alone. Until they meet their life partner, they’re stuck in the world of finding roommates off of Craigslist or getting set up with a friend’s friend who also needs a roommate and just hoping for the best. Romantic couples who live together get to pretend they’re rich because they don’t have “roommates” but, yes they do—they just have sex with said roommate. The point is that, it’s quite likely you could find yourself dating a 30 or even 40-something year old with a roommate, and now you’re kind of in a relationship with that roommate, too. Here are awkward scenarios that come up when he has a roommate.

Accidentally eating his food

You try so hard to be a good house guest, to barely be noticeable, to stay out of the way and then…it turns out that that was the roommate’s box of chocolates you’d been chipping away at (until you finished it) all week.

Sneaking into his bathroom

If the place has two bathrooms, then you may or may not want to sneak into the roomy’s bathroom for more, eh, private business. So things get awkward when the roommate comes home and catches you in his bathroom. Lighting a candle.

Getting there too early

Your man asks you to meet at his place at 7pm. You get there at 6:50 pm—traffic was light. Aaand your man isn’t home. But his roommate is. Oh, and your man texts to say he’ll be 20 minutes late. So now the roommate is stuck entertaining you when he really just wanted to watch Netflix.

Witnessing the roommate disputes

Sometimes you’re witness to a little roommate dispute about who buys all the toilet paper or who needs to tidy up more in the kitchen. It’s very uncomfortable. You can feel the roommate giving you side eye, wishing you weren’t there.

Feeling you overstay your welcome

You’re always wondering if you’re overstaying your welcome. The roommate says you’re welcome any time. Your boyfriend says it’s cool. But, it’s not like the roommate would say anything if he wished you weren’t around so you never quite know.

When he knows you just had sex

It’s so obvious when you two have been having sex especially if you’re loud in bed. Especially, especially if you let yourself be really loud because you didn’t think the roommate was home but…oh…he was. Hello there.

Gossiping when you think he’s out

There are those nights when your man just wants to complain to you about how awful his roommate has been. You’ve noticed annoying things too, so you two just get to roasting the roommate whom you thought was away because he hadn’t made an appearance or a peep for three hours. Turns out he was in his room reading.

Having him walk in on you

The roomy doesn’t know you’re there so he just barges into the…bathroom or…your man’s bedroom to borrow something and there you are, nude as the day you were born.

When you walk in on him

Of course, you’ll walk in on him too…on the toilet or…pleasuring himself because he does not have a girlfriend to come over. You all have to pretend it didn’t happen.

When you get a delivery

Sometimes—you try to minimize it—you have to get a delivery delivered to your man’s place. It’s just safer there for valuable deliveries because they have a closed entry. But that can leave the roommate answering the door for UPS and collecting your package, which he doesn’t appreciate.

Borrowing the parking spot

There are only so many parking spots and sometimes, when you believe the roommate will be out for a while, you just use his. Then he calls your man very aggravated that he can’t park. He gives you the silent treatment the rest of the night.

Pressure to invite him

Some nights, you and your man are going out, and the roommate just seems so sad and lonely. So you invite him and your man does not appreciate that.

Making chit chat, ever

When you wind up alone with the roomy—like if your man has to run to the store—you try to make chit chat but it’s awkward. It’s just such a forced relationship.

When you know they’re beefing

There are days when you know your man and his roomy are beefing. Your boyfriend told you before you came over that they got into a huge fight. And you just walk in and could cut the tension in the air with a knife but still need to make nice with the roomy.

When it’s time to move

When the day comes to move in together, you’re stealing a roommate from your man’s roommate. He has to find someone else to share the rent with. Or, perhaps you ask him to leave…he wasn’t on the lease in the first place.
