Alderman Seeks Creation of ‘Office of Legislative Counsel’
(Chicago Sun Times) — Emboldened by Mayor Daley’s impending retirement, an influential aldermen is moving to level the playing field between the executive and legislative branches. Ald. Marge Laurino (39th), chairman of the City Council’s Capital and Economic Development Committee, introduced an ordinance at Wednesday’s City Council meeting that would create an “office of legislative counsel.” Currently, the city’s 289-employee, $26.8 million-a-year Law Department provides Chicago aldermen with the legal advice they need to draft legislation and consider ordinances introduced by the mayor.
