Hot Diggety: City Parks’ Food Goes Upscale
(Crain’s) — Lunchtime in New York City’s parks usually means hot dogs, pretzels, Italian ices and soda. But their days as the reigning grub in the Big Apple are numbered. City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe has launched an aggressive campaign to improve the quality of food in the city’s green spaces. He plans to replace many of the 300 concessionaires currently operating in parks with vendors who sell healthful and sophisticated fare. He says parkgoers want more choices.
