Black Lawmakers Break New Ground, Suffer Losses
(Black America Web) — Black lawmakers scored historic victories and suffered crushing defeats Tuesday night in congressional and gubernatorial elections across the country. Terri Sewell and Tim Scott became history makers last night when they won seats in the House of Representatives. Sewell, an Alabama Democrat, defeated Republican challenger Don Chamberlain to become the first black woman to be elected to Congress from her state. “I am honored and humbled for the opportunity to represent the 7th District,” Sewell told The Birmingham News last night. “I’m full of gratitude and humility right now.”
