Reed: City to Investigate Report Police Destroyed Records
(Kasim Reed) — Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed promised an aggressive investigation into claims Atlanta Police Department officials and officers erased text messages, cell phone photos and e-mails that a judge ordered turned over in a lawsuit based on a raid of a gay bar a year ago. And if the charges leveled in court filings are true, “we’re going to deal with them in a very swift fashion,” Reed told the Atlanta Gay Network Thursday. He also said he would have an announcement within a week about the case, a lawsuit brought by the Atlanta Eagle and some of its patrons who were forced to lay on the barroom floor as members of APD’s Red Dog unit searched them directed anti-homosexual slurs at them. Reed said the announcement “will be very significant” to the gay community.
