Study: Teens Talk About Growing Up in New Orleans Most Violent Neighborhoods
(Times-Picayune) — In a unique effort to understand crime from the perspective of those most affected by it, researchers spent a year interviewing a dozen African-American teens about their experiences growing up in Central City, one of New Orleans’ most violent neighborhoods.The results, detailed in the “Youth Think Tank” study, were released Wednesday, with the purpose of informing police and others about the root issues faced by disenfranchised youths. Central City has been home to some of the city’s most high-profile shootings, from the recent killing of 2-year-old Jeremy Galmon, to two shootings outside New Orleans College Prep charter school, to the execution of five young men in June 2006.
